I was looking at getting a new laptop, and I don't want a huge 17" display. The Inspirion 6000 with a 15.4" screen seems like a good size. I'd like a display that's 1600 pixels wide, which gives me the options of:
WSXGA+ = 1680x1050
WUXGA = 1920x1200
I'm thinking 1920x1200 would just be too small on a 15.4" screen. I'm used to 1600x1200 on a 22" CRT, and actually using a higher resolution on a laptop seems like a bad idea. If I was going to play a game, though, 1920x1200 seems like a nice resolution because you could play games in 800x600. 800x600 scales perfectly onto a 1600x1200 LCD, so it should look good on a 1920x1200 screen, too.
1680x1050 is a strange resolution, though. How am I supposed to play games with a resolution like that? Half of that is 840x525, and it probably wouldn't even let me select a strange resolution like that, let alone play games in it.
I would like to get a cheap Inspirion 6000 with a Mobility Radeon X300. I know it's not going to be useful for anything but light gaming, and I'm not planning on doing much of any gaming on it. I'm sure the X300 really couldn't play anything at 1680x1050, so how will different resolutions work out? If that resolution won't work with any games, I might as well just get integrated graphics.
1680x1050 has been a popular laptop resolution for a long time, but I haven't ever tried to change the resolution on a laptop running it. How well does it work?
