15:28 - That's how long it took to rip a CD using EAC...something is amiss, but what?

Allrighty then. I have what is (arguably) the best audio ripping DVD-rom around; LiteOn LTD-163. Using Exact Audio Copy (EAC), 44.1KHz, 16-bit stereo, it just took me 15:28 to rip the CD "Ultimate Funk" a compilation CD. I ripped AC/DC "Dirty Deeds" and it took 15 minutes and change.

What is going on here? I read that people using this DVD-R are ripping CD's in 3-4 minutes.

Yes, the current DMA setting for the drive is "Ultra DMA."

I am transferring the files to a 2-drive RAID 0 stripe...I highly doubt that has anything to do with it....any ideas, please?

EAC has a complciated ECC algorithm that will read a disc many many times if it detects errors or inconsistent results and *will* slow down to get a more acurate read. Thus, if your disc is scratched or not of the highest quality, Rips may take much longer.

Example: B'z' 11, this CD took me 45 minutes to rip because I set it to digital ECC and one track was scratched into oblivion.

Result:The track that was completly unreadable before now just came out with nothing more than minor pops and hiss's

A normal program will *NOT* do that, but you will sacrafice speed. Try another disc and see if it's not the disc that's the problem.

Thanks, FishTankX. That is an intelligent explanation. :) I appreciate that. 99% of my CDs are in Primo, Brand-New condition. I'm one of those people that only holds the CD with the hole in the middle and the edge and if someone else touches the CD surface, I scream at them. :Q

I must admit, all the MP3's I've made from the .wav rips so far are PRIMO. I've listened to probably a 10% sampling of the 24+CDs I've ripped, and every track is spotless.

So, I guess that's the price I pay for awesome MP3's huh? Sheeeeeeeet, now all I need is that 100GB hard drive to fit them all...I'm quickly running out of space on this 45GB'er!

yeah the good ripping programs (cdparanoia also comes to mind, and i'm sure there are others) tend to take longer, but they are worth it.

I think the thing is in your DRIVE options you can choose either C2 error correction or you can choose burst mode. Burst mode is the mode where people are ripping cd's in 4 minutes, but there is no error correction. If you have really good condition cd's, you could probably use burst mode without a problem, but if you have some questionable scratches use C2.

C2 mode actually reads the 16 bits and makes sure 8 of them matches (something like that). If it doesn't match then it tries again until it gets it, results in almost exact wavs, which is why it might be taking long. Check your Drive options to see.

Yep, hudster; we are a rare breed. I have quite a few friends that buy CDs w/their hard earned money and then they treat them like mini-frisbees. :Q Really sad and a waste of money, actually, you know?

I honestly dont understand how peoples cds get so scratched... I mean, I look at some epeople CD collections and it looks like they took all of their CDs and set them on a rough metal surface and rubbed them in circles...... WHAT THE HECK?????

Its so easy to take care of cds and dvds, how do they get fingerprints and scratches all over them ALL OVER????? Im glad there are other clean cd freaks out there like me
