Acura wants to charge me $149 plus taxes and shipping for an updated Navigation DVD. Is there a cheaper way? I have a 2005 Acura MDX.

Wow...that's ridiculous. You can buy a new navigation system for that price. Automakers have to start getting more realistic with their navigation systems....get in bed with Garmin, Microsoft (like Ford has), or whomever so that they can offer this feature cheaply. It can't be long. I realize the manufacturers want to get every penny they can out of this feature...but at some point it will just become the next CD player (included in most every car).

The update DVD for my dash-mounted GPS is $75. It's not as though charging ridiculous prices for the updates is unique to Acura.

It's because you don't ask how much the DVD update will cost when you buy the car. You care about the car and it's price but the car company knows that once you have the car you're more or less stuck. They'll charge as much as people are willing to pay for.

Ebay. I've gotten DVD updates from ebay before and they've always been legit, working versions.

Magellan charges $ 79.99. Garmin charges $ 59. TomTom charges $ 59.95, supposed to be, but if you get them for free, good for you. (If you are talking about TomTom's latest map guarantee, update is free within only 30 days after purchase)

I think he may be thinking only about the OS/firmware. Firmware updates are free for mine too.

Acura uses a system by Alpine .. this chart shows the differences between model years:

Alpine's numbering scheme for their discs:

X.YZ

X = Generation of Navigation Unit:
1 = 1st gen (hard drive units)
2 = 2nd gen (2000-2003) - Black Disc
3 = 3rd gen (2003-2004) - Orange Disc
4 = 4th gen (2005-2009) - White Disc
5 = 5th gen (not currently used)
6 = 6th gen (2007-2009) (Honda vehicles only so far) - Aqua Disc

Y= Update Revision Number (starting with 1)
Z = Minor Software Correction

https://store.alpine-usa.com/A...dvdsales/naviorder.php
And yes the current on line price is $149 (which I think is high) .. My Garmin also charges about
$70 or so to update the maps and personally for that cost, it is cheaper to buy a newer model with more features.

You need this disc: Acura Navi DVD Version 4.73 (white face for your year)

That's nothing. I was looking at an Eclipse headunit that has built in Nav. Eclipse makes good headunits, but It's DVD based and I wondered how much and often it's updated.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-p...8-Map-Update-Disc.html

$329 for the 2008 map pack "The DVD-ROM's data has been compiled as of December 2006."

What's worse, I browsed some audio forums and found out that Eclipse never updates their disc, they simply sell new HUs and just not support the older ones.

What a joke! That's why I went with the Kenwood DNX8120 w/ the built in Garmin.

Why do you need to update it? Are there that many new roads where you drive that it doesn't recognize? Have you been getting lost a lot because of it? If so I guess I'd just pony up the money and pay Acura for the updates.

Honestly, with all the business closings I'd wait a year or two and then update it after all that shakes out.

Maybe I'm mistaken then...because I was almost sure I got free updates every time I hook it up to my computer...I'll have to check.

Not with Garmin .. They offer 1 free update when you first get the unit, in case the database is old & you must use it within 30 days.
After that, they want you to pay for map updates (but not for Firmware updates)

On the Acura/Alpine DVD update: When you are on the order page there is a link that takes you to a list of what's updated. Check it out - you may not benefit from the new DVD.

That's what I'm wondering. If they give you a GPS that doesn't include all the current roads, and then update it later, you should get it for free.

My buddy's Commander has one, and Chrysler/Jeep wants several hundred dollars for a new one, and it's not even up to date.

Short version of the story, I was involved in some pretty in depth attempts to make backup copies of the Acura disks a few years ago and no one was able to do it. I've since sold my TL but I don't think they were ever able to get it working. I'm probably walking a fine line here but for the record I'm not advocating doing anything bad, just saying what is what. My whole navi unit actually crapped out right before I sold it and they replaced it under warranty and gave me the most recent disk. Didn't change a thing in my area. I did upgrade the disk in my 05 BMW to the latest 09 and there is one road that's different.

I don't think it's worth paying $150 for a disk or even really $60 but if they charged people less I think more would upgrade and they would probably make more $$ but that's just my thought.

You guys are right. Besides, I've had the car for 3.5 years and have less than 12K miles on it. I think I'll pass.

What!

That's crazy. I was hoping the MyGig used SatNav... which was one of my incentives for getting a new Jeep next summer.
