144hz problems

DigDog

Lifer
i recently got a 144hz monitor; when i play quake, or when i use the tester : https://www.testufo.com/refreshrate
i can see that the monitor is running 144hz as intended.

However, if the monitor turns off because of the power saving (leaving the PC to do nothing for a while), when i come back it cannot hold a high framerate, it goes down to 40hz, making even playing quake impossible.

I'm using DP1.2, and i'm on W7. I installed the latest monitor drivers.

I'm not 100% sure it's the power saving, because sometimes it does this, some other times it doesn't. Not sure who the culprit is, either. It's not *that big* of a problem, because a restart only takes a few seconds, but i'm concerned about WHY it happens.

Thoughts?

Is the 144hz an overclock or is that the native refresh of the monitor? If it's an overclock, this would be my guess.

nope, 144 out of the box. i'm using a gtx 770, which has no problem capping framerates at 250 on quake, so that isn't the issue.

now i just came back from 4 hours at work, and my monitor came back from sleep and everything's fine, 144hz on the tester. Some other times, it stays stuck and 40hz.

I used to have this problem on my 40" 4K monitor I had... it dropped to 30hz from 60hz randomly and I had to set it back through NVidia control panel... first what I had to do was set it to a low resolution like 1080p @ 60hz in NVidia CP, reboot the monitor and when it came back up, set it to 4K through windows display settings. No idea why I couldn't then set it to 4K 60hz in NVidia CP but it wouldn't work, had to go back to Windows after rebooting monitor @ 1080p 60hz.

It was a hassle but didn't happen super frequently so I lived with it. Never did root cause the problem, I just figured it was due to me buying a cheaper monitor. You may want to try another display port cable if you have one.

i have read that the DP cable might be the issue, however it is a cable supplied by the manufacturer for their 144hz native monitor - i would expect it to be able to carry 144hz.

Also, i have updated the NVidia control panel to default to 144hz, i'm not sure if was doing this already as i had only set it through the Windows UI. Could be that when Windows goes into power saving mode, the NV control panel takes over and at waking it sticks with the lower framerate. I've seen the framerate in chrome drop as low as 17 fps, so there's something going on. I'm more bothered that i dont know what's happening, then the fact that it's happening. I'm so bothered, in fact, that i have had positive thoughts about MacOS, that's how badly it bothers me.

i don't have the luxury to do that. Also, the problem is intermittent, haven't even isolated a reason why it would happen. right now the monitor was sleeping, and it woke up to 144hz. other times, it wakes to 40hz.

youre gonna continue to spin your wheels unless you can isolate where the problem is happening. trying the machine on a different display device like a TV will still show a 60 -> 40hz drop if it maintains that behavior.

fair enough, but i could potentially run into someone who has solved this, assuming that it is a known problem relating to one of these components (the screen, the cable, the gpu, the OS).
My attitude is due to the fact that i haven't got the means to test it any other way. I genuinely do not know anyone else who owns a pc, nor a TV, so i'm knida screwed here.

I am considering a reinstall of my OS, which is easier said than done.
