1440p vs 4k monitor

Hi all,

Upgraded my GPUs, currently have a 295x2 and a 290x in my PC. So that's all fine and good.

Currently I have an iiyama G2773HS 120hz 1080 monitor. Been a great monitor, but feel that my GPUs are very wasted at 1080 so looking to upgrade.

Question is, what to? I've seen the 32inch Benq 3200PT 1440p monitor which looks appealing, but then I know I've probably got enough power to give 4K a decent shot. The proper 4k panels are super expensive and I don't want to splurge thousands on one, but there are others available for about 400-500 quid.

What do you think would be worth a shot? Or is there not much point in upgrading now?

Cheers.

4K still has lots of issues. You pretty much need to use display scaling to use it comfortably (so any added desktop space is lost) and that is not all that well supported on any OS and 3rd party software right now. You'll also be limited to 60 Hz.

That said, I don't recommend a 32" 1440p either. It will have fairly big pixels at that size. I was ok with 30" 2560x1600 but do prefer 27" 2560x1440 a bit more. I think it fits your field of view better while still providing ample desktop space. If you're not in a hurry you could wait for other manufacturers to catch up with ASUS on the 1440p 144Hz front.

Also consider buying 2 more monitors (perhaps the same G2773HS you already have) and try eyefinityx3 surround gaming?

It would be the equivalent of 3K resolution, so a bit easier on the GPUs compared to 4K, so maybe you'll hit higher FPS that you could enjoy on the 120hz displays.

I guess 4K is a nono then. Hmm.

I was considering going eyefinity, the trouble is in the room I'm in space is definitely an issue. I can have 2 monitors, but any more and I'm really running out of room.

How much of a step up in quality is 1440p?

~70% + AMVA colors if you choose the 32", but only 60Hz.

Although 120Hz 27" IPS like panels are on the way.

Not to worry. I'm not desperate, and can at least wait a couple of months to see if something changes :)

From the freesync thread it appears to be Q1 2015 (Jan-Mar). It could be up to 6 months.

I'm biding my time checking for any new 4k monitors to drop the price a bit yet but can't wait to hop on the 4k bandwagon. I could use the real estate for productivity but gaming with that many more pixels seems like a huge step up.

Pick up a cheap 280$ 1440 Korean monitor that will OC. Wait for 4K to mature. Once you get used to 120hz its hard to go back.

You have to choose whether high frame rates are your goal, pixel density or colour gamut. Right now the monitor manufacturers are making you choose between these 3 options, and only pixel density goes all the way up to 4k, the others are 1600p and below.

For gaming having played at 1440p with gsync I have to say its a fantastic experience, it just fixes a lot of stutter in games. Hopefully async will be of similar qualities and a 120hz+ monitor comes out with it as soon as the monitors are released. But many people do choose pixel density (4k) or gamut (IPS) over and above refresh rate and motion blur reduction.

So the first question you have to determine is which of these avenues you care about pursuing the most. Then given that you can work out what whether its a big high resolution monitor of that type of 3 lower resolutions for eyefinity.

^ Good points. (btw, Dell has a 5k monitor out or just hitting the market which is double the pixels of 4k)

I would love to combine those, 4k with synchronization and motion blur reduction would be ideal. I guess we'll be waiting until 2015 to see them, if even then.

The displayport spec (1.3) literally only passed this week and it will bring 4k@144hz. I would not anticipate seeing a high refresh rate monitor on that for at least a year at this point.

It is. 1080p looks blurry to me now.

Well I ordered a monitor and prior to this thread cancelled it. However it ended up coming anyway. So I have it to try out. So far I do love it a lot. 4k looks incredible. Only issue is 1080p content doesn't look QUITE as good, but I still have my older monitor if I want to play PS4 games and it's only an inch smaller so it's almost a non issue.

I think I might just keep it...

Only thing I've noticed is UI in windows is a bit small. Other than that its just fine. Some rare games you have to scale the UI up a bit thats the only issues I've gotten within a months time. Only con is wanting another 290x for ultra smooth gameplay and another 4k monitor because it looks that much better.
