1440p or 4K?

Hey guys my system is in my signature. I use a Dell U2412M monitor, and with a 970GTX card, games run fine and all, not at the max settings, but fine enough for me. I want to upgrade, first question is, is 1200p considered low in late 2016? If so then I will upgrade, but I am confused then to what, 1440p or 4K? My budget is around 500-600 USD max, and if I have read right then 4K is generally preferred if monitor is 32 inches, so I think my budget will be pushed a bit. And for 1440p I am sure 27 inches will be okay?

Main thing is I will be upgrading to either 1070 or 1080 next year, to compensate for the frame drops I will have in games because of resolution increase, but I do want to stay as close to 60 frames as possible.

So kindly suggest accordingly.

If you want to game at 4k at 60 FPS, a GTX 1070 won't cut it. In many games a GTX 1080 won't cut it either, unless you dial your settings back. 4k gaming is not a cheap hobby.

1440p you would be fine, and you might want to read some GTX 1070 SLI reviews and see if that's a better option for the games you play over a single GTX 1080.

I would highly suggest you go physically look at a 1440 screen running at 144hz, and a 4K screen running at 60hz if at all possible.

Your question will answer itself just looking at them. Everyone is different, but personally, I much prefer a 1440@144hz screen with freesync/g-sync over a 4K@60hz screen.

Ha ha thanks guys. Well I myself prefer high refresh rates, for example headache starts when frames drop below 40, but nothing at 60, but I am not sure how far human eyes can differentiate above 60 frames. Well ruling out 4K then, if a GTX 1080 can't handle it then no point, I will never invest in anything more than a 1080 anyway, in fact 1070 is my aim, but there might be sellers who use stuffs for short time, in that case I will grab a 1080.

So now as 1440p is settled, could you guys suggest one or two monitors, in that budget (in my country price is always 20% higher than in western countries), but still. I am looking for something with as best colour accuracy as possible, IPS obviously, could do with 60 Hz to be honest and another thing is the stand has to be really strong (U2412M like), lots of monitors come with flimsy stands nowadays but I have a small desk with no support of any walls in backside, can't take that risk. But I am repeating once again, colour accuracy is of utmost importance, gaming will be first priority yes, but then its photo editing.

If you want a strong stand then another Dell Ultrasharp at sizes 27"-28" at 1440p, but I don't know if Dell even has any of those models with 144Hz refresh nevermind G-Sync.
