1440p - GTX 1060 6GB or 1070?

Indus

Lifer
I play most mmorpg's so I don't need 144 fps.

I do want a steady 60 fps at 1440p.

So what are my options between these 2 cards?

Also is volta close to happening that I should just wait 3 months for to pick up a GTX 2070? (I know the 1070 has been out 14 months already and Nvidia usually has 15-18 month refresh cycles).

This is a bad time to by a video card, prices are outrageous.
If it were me and I needed a card, I'd buy a $500 gtx1080, 1070 prices are too high and the gtx1060 is too slow.

edit: yes for ~ $60 more ,I'd grab a 1080, just checked prices.

Basically this.

Vega 56 may be the only sensible option at this price point if vendors don't screw us.

No I don't want to go Vega. I'd rather wait for Volta.

Bad exp with ATi in the past.
Volta is about 4 or 5 months away, at least.
A gtx 2070 will cost you more than $400 anyway, and performance will be similar to a gtx1080.

A gtx 1080 for about $500 or less is your best bet if you want the performance now, if not, wait for the 2070 and get about the same performance for $80 less, 5 months from now.
If it were me ,I'd just pay the extra $80, get the 1080 and enjoy the extra performance now .

I'm happy with my 1060 doing some stuff (not so intensive) at 4k, but I did get it before the recent mining related price spikes.....

If its sane to do so then definitely worth waiting a little while to see if the mining price spikes burn themselves out.

Not that getting a 1080 now is wrong, but the 2070 is likely to (roughly) match the 1080ti. That's NV's historic rate of improvement.

As for timescale, no one quite knows. Very definitely by next spring - the huge compute Volta cards are already out, and there's a tegra due by September. Could easily be something before Xmas, could be not.

Nvidia has also historically been gimping their 70 series cards more and more each generation though since the 70 series became cutdown midrange dies. For Kepler the GTX 680 was only 8% ahead of the GTX 670 at 2560x1600 in the techpowerup testsuite. In Maxwell that advantage for the 980 over he 970 jumped to 15% at 2560x1600 in their testsuite. In Pascal it became a 21% advantage for the GTX 1080 vs the GTX 1070 at 2560x1440.

Well maybe but the 1070 still arrived at +- the 980ti 🙂 Perhaps more a case of the 1080 overachieving slightly vs 'par'.

1070 or a used 980ti would be your best bet at 1440p
I have sli 980tis and a 1440p 144hz monitor and some games I don't hit 60 on ultra, so I would recomend getting the best gpu for the price as you can
