1440p Graphics Card

I recently bought a 2560 x 1440 monitor from Monoprice and my current graphics card (GTX 660) isn't doing to well trying to run my games because I like to turn up the settings. So I'm looking for an upgrade. I was thinking of getting a GTX 770 but it only has 2GB of VRAM. Is this enough or will it have better performance if I get the 4GB VRAM model. If there are any other cards that you guys can recommend please inform me.

Don't know if you guys will need this but here
PC Specs
CPU: AMD FX-8350 @ 4.5 GHz
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) 1600 MHz
Memory: 1TB WD Caviar Blue, Samsung 250GB 840 Evo
MOBO: MSI 990FXA-GD80 V2
Case: NZXT Phantom 410
PSU: EVGA SuperNova 750 Watt Gold

I would wait and maybe get a 28nm Maxwell card in the Spring/Summer. Right now is not such a great time to go spend $$$$ on a new GFX card.

I'm also seriously contemplating the move to 1440p, and would likewise require a GPU upgrade from my 670. Given no news on Maxwell from nVidia at CES, I've half a mind to go for an aftermarket 290 in a couple of weeks and move to 20nm a year from now.
If course it all depends on what kind of budget you're working on, and your upgrade-cycle.

Depending on what games you play, I would recommend GTX 780 or r290 as a minimum for this resolution. I changed my GTX 670 to a 7990 because it wasn't able to run the newest games fluently.

Otherwise a r280x or GTX 770 is ok, but you might need to turn down some settings.

I have a 1440p monitor and a 670... it runs really well I think. I turn down some settings on occasion but nothing I even really notice. I'd give it a shot and see if you're ok with it before just blindly upgrading the video first, you won't even know what benefits you receive 🙂

If you want to make 1440p routine then forget about any form of AA. And to play high to very high you need a 290x oc or 780ti or at least a Titan.

With a 290 or 780 you may get away 70% of the time but not 90% of the time as 1440p needs that final 10% performance to touch 50-60 fps.

With a 770 or 280x you won't be comfortable in demanding games. You will end up with med-high settings.

OP, what games are you playing? With my Lightning overclocked to 1320/1650- I can play some of the more demanding games with some nice eye candy enabled with framerates that are acceptable to me.

Metro LL

Crysis 3

I want to play at some higher settings around high in most of my games. I want to be getting an average of at least 50-60 frames.

I was doing ok with my 7970Ghz, but decided to go CF to maintain Ultra settings and AA with FPS > 60.

I game at 2560x1600, and my 7970Ghz has been doing well until BF4.

Today I got a GTX780Ti Superclocked and I could not be happier. Huge difference over the 7970 in battlefield 4 at least.

If you plan on OCing, a single OC'd 780 will have no issue running BF4 at 60 fps with 2xmsaa and everything maxed.

Not saying BS, but i doubt he can run ultra settings 2xmsaa @1440 with a single 780 even OC and stay above 60 most of the time. It will dip down below 60 that's for sure.

BF4 gets really hairy depending on the map and whats going on (heavy firefight/big explosion).

He will see above 60 when nothing is going on or flying.

Now there was a bit ago the game played wonderful for me, but since the last patch the performance has gone down.

I think I need another 780TI to get close to 120 frames @ 1440. Ridicilous to need 1500$ of gpu's to push a SINGLE monitor

If you're in some smoke it might dip below 60. It stays above it the vast majority of the time though. I'm sure anyone here with an OC'd 780 can confirm.
