I just ordered a 1440p IPS monitor. I have been gaming on a 1080p monitor with an i7 2600k @ 4.6ghz (could go higher yet), 16 gigs of 1600mhz ram, and dual 6970's in crossfire. I get great framerates on ultra settings for any game I can throw at it. Now that I am going to be running 2560X1440 how much of a performance hit will I take? I'm assuming I don't really need any AA enabled at that resolution. Will I have to turn down the eye candy quite a bit? I don't really want to upgrade my video cards until next summer. I'm just wondering what I can expect performance wise once my new monitor arrives. I also have not overclocked my 6970's either.
 
By the way, for those doing gaming in 1440p, how much of a difference is there from 1080p?

I'm thinking about the nascent 4K desktop monitors, which I think will be pretty neat for text/video but I'm a lot less sure about gaming.
But for those using 1440p monitors, how much of a gaming difference is there? Would be awesome with detailed answers.
 
Hey Jaydip I see you have the same monitor that I ordered. How do you like it? I based my decision off the reviews I had read for it. It seemed to be one of the top reviewed 27" IPS monitors out there.

1440p is so much better I wouldn't go back to 1080p even if it was at 120hz. I've seen both 1080p 120hz and 1440p 60hz and I prefer the higher resolution. The frame rate hit can be a bit brutal but it's worth it.
 
The quality jump from 1080p to 1440p is enormous. Try playing at 1366x768 on your 1080p monitor, that's about the difference in quality you will get going up. You can get used to going back to 60 hz although if you get the right monitor you won't have to - you can have best of both worlds with a 120 hz overclockable PLS monitor (QNIX/X-Star on ebay).

Going from a 24" 1080p to a 27" 1440p, I notice the jaggies are reduced by about a factor of 2. Meaning 1440p with 2x AA has about the same jagginess as 4x AA with 1080p; 0x at 1440p about the same as 2x at 1080p. 4x AA at 1440p is glorious if you can handle it.

Yeah keep in mind that your response time will be a little more then non ips but you might not even notice most people dont.
 
you'll be totally fine. To my surprise, going to 1440p was hardly a performance hit even with my single GTX 670. I bought another GTX 670 for SLI before my 1440p IPS arrived, but it was overkill! (created another thread for that). AA is totally not needed at this resolution, it hardly makes a difference and the performance hit is totally not worth it. Maybe that's what offset the difference, @ 1080 i used AA, but @ 1440p i never use it cause its not needed, so any performance hit is offset by having AA off.

Now, what shocked me is that CPU DOES play a factor even @ 1440p! I had an AMD 5600k when i first did this build @ 1440p, went to a 2500k @ 4.4ghz and saw my FPS jump 25-30fps across the board (except Crysis 3 and BF3, but even they saw 15-20 fps jumps!). Your CPU and setup is more than enough!

its beyond silly to run a resolution below native on an LCD for any type of comparisons. 1440p compared to 1080p is nothing like the blurry garbage that 1366x768 would be on a 1080p screen.
 
All these comments seem to be pretty much spot on in terms of the jump from 1080 to 1440. It is a massive difference visually as you are going from 2,073,600 to 3,686,400 pixels. The additional pixel density transforms your games and can make even older games feel new again and worth revisiting. This is why you often read people saying that going from 1080 to 1440/ 1600 was the best PC investment they have made in years.

As QuantumPion mentioned you now have the luxury of buying very affordable Samsung PLS panels from Qnix ( Model QX2710 of which I have two here at the moment and both do 120Hz no probs) and Xstar that are capable of doing 120Hz.

Is there a big difference between 1440 @60Hz and 1440 @120Hz? Yes there is! As long as you have graphics power to maintain 100+ FPS you would find 120Hz gaming to be significantly smoother, more realistic and fluid than 60Hz.

In your case with crossfire 6970s you may have to make compromises on visual quality depending on the games you play? and yes you can notice jaggies at 1440 so AA is still worth using, the good news is 2xAA @1440 is normaly enough unless you are very picky.

I think its mostly exaggeration. I played on a native 1440x900 screen and going 1080 in and of itself did not offer some magical image quality difference. its simply better because you get much more screen to work with. physically and more pixels. even 1440x900 still looks perfectly fine on screen where that that is native. its just to damn small of course to be useful nowadays.

Depends on the game. Quality wise with an IPS monitor the color and everything is incredible. I find I like shooters in windowed mode at 1080p res due to my setup and how close I end up to my monitors. Less strain to look at a smaller section of the screen.

For MMO types and Starcraft I go full 1600p and it looks amazing. I've done FPS (Black Ops 2 currently) from time to time but I nearly get dizzy. I need a slightly deeper desk. But couldn't go back to a 24 inch 1080p screen.

the color depth you get is great as well

I'm currently trying to decide on a new monitor for my build. 1440P sounds like it might fit my needs of both gaming and HD media. Can anyone recommend some quality 1440P IPS monitors, preferably ones that I don;t have to import to the US?
 
Considering my HD 7850' are about the same performance wise you will be fine, without AA and TressFX disabled Tomb Raider at Ultra is 60FPS almost all the time, the same with BF3, minus the TressFX.

Tempest Overlord I think are already imported to the USA, not sure though as I have never looked into it considering I live in England.

Are you prepared to spend a bit more?

I like the Dell U2713HM IPS. It's around $590
There is also the Dell UltraSharp U2711 which is around $625
Some people like PLS and Asus has the PB278Q around $550
Monoprice has their own branded 27" IPS 1440p monitor for $483

The nice thing about Monoprice is they use the A-1 panels but they do not use any that have defective pixels and anomalies. They select the best panels and reject the ones with issues. Plus they have great customer service. So if you need to save a few bux that is not a bad option. Dell offers more features and arguably better color since it comes calibrated from the factory. Apple also has a 27" 1440p display but they want $1000 for it.

sorry but you must have some other settings disabled as there is no way you are at 60 fps at 1440. my card is faster than yours and I just barely stay at 60 fps at just 1080 with those settings. in fact I reduced shadows another notch just to keep above 60 fps the whole time. now please explain how a slower card can do that at twice the pixels.

oh just realized you have 7850 crossfired...

I have a Dell 2713HM. This is my fourth one now, and they've all had dead pixels and noticeable backlight bleed... unacceptable in a $600 monitor in my opinion. Dell seems to be reluctantly sending me another one (haven't actually received shipping confirmation which I why I says "seems") with a new panel that supposedly corrects some of the issues with this monitor.

At this point I wish I had just gotten a Qnix or Xstar--because whatever I'm paying for with Dell it obviously isn't quality control.

I'm playing Dota2 and SC2 currently on a single MSI 760 and they run great at 1440.

It's fine.Make sure you install the Dell display manager which have both auto and manual modes for your convenience.I based my purchase decision on the reviews too :biggrin:
