What's better for noise and cooling?

stock Fractal Design 140mm fan or Gentle Typhoon 120mm 1450rpm

I've been thinking about using two intake fans and one rear for my R4 case.

I have Scythe Slipstream and Noctua fans both and I can tell you that these guys at 800 RPM are silent, at 900 are just becoming audible if you get your ear near them, and by 1200+ RPM both are simply noisy, to me anyhow. Not old fashioned Delta noisy, but noisy. Even the famed GT fan, at 1450, won't be remotely considered quiet if you actually run it at that.

I doubt you'll find anyone that has those 2 exact fans to compare for you. As a general guideline, rpm = noise, and 140's move more air than 120's. Keeping that in mind, and assuming Fractal R4 cases ship w/ decent quality fans, you are basically comparing 140 vs. 120. And if you're looking for a certain amount of airflow, the 140 will do it at a lower rpm and therefore be quieter. That's really overgeneralized of course.

If you're looking to remove a stock 140mm and put a GT 120mm in instead, I think you'll find it a waste of money.

You can put a 140mm fan in a 120x120mm window. The 140mm will use the whole window, where the 120mm fan will use at most 78% of the window -- actually less.

I use 140mm fans wherever I can. That said, where I need to use 120mm fans I use Gentle Typhoons at around 750 rpm (an AP-15 at 5v) or 800 rpm (AP-12's). When the fan frame is vertical, a Slip Stream at the same rpm is a perfect substitute -- just check the oil twice a year.

I'd probably guess that the Scythe GTs would be quieter but not much if you're gauging by ear. The Fractal fans should be decent enough and I don't think there is a need to replace them. If you'd like to add more fans like the Scythe GTs, use them as intakes and Fractal fans as exhausts.

Its a waste of money trying to replace all of them with Scythe GTs. You probably have better luck creating a quieter rig by using a sound dampened case or bigger heatsinks for the CPU/GPU.

the Typhoons are good for static pressure, something you'd want on a radiator or heatsink, but not necessarily for intakes or exhausts

if you're not happy with the Fractal fans, you'd be better off replacing them with an alternative 140mm fan like Corsair's AF140 than with Typhoons.
