See if you can get a 9800 or a 6600 (GT would be nice, maybe refurb, if you don't mind it).
Probably the two best options for you.

There are several 9700pros for under $110 shipped in the FS/FT area here on AT if you want to go that route.

the only thing you would be able to afford is a 9600(pro/xt). i would recommend saving up like 40 bucks and getting a 6600gt, preferably a leadtek.

used 9700 Pro/9800 or new 6600 (non-GT).

An overclocked 6600 should perform pretty well, but stock it probably won't be as good as a 9700/9800 series card.

You can safely ignore the 9600 series at $140.

Either option will be WAY better than the GF3 you're using. I'd probably go with the crowd, save some money and go the 9700 route. It will be a huge difference from what you have now, and you can get it cheaper than the 6600.

GAH!!!!! a 6600 vanilla EASILY can outperform a 9800xt when OCed (and it still beats an OCed 9800xt, from what i've heard) AND has shader model 3.0 (very much needed for next gen games)

6600 (gt if possible) and get leadtek...take my word!

A regular 6600 isn't going to be playing any next gen games with SM3.0 enabled at playable framerates... take my word!

Really? You'd have to show me some benchmarks, because a stock 6600 vanilla is WAY SLOWER than a 9800p, and it doesn't have the ddr3 memory of a 6600gt, so it will never be as fast. Also, if you plan on playing furure games on a 6600 with sm3 eye candy, I hope you enjoy slideshows, because that's what you're gonna see.

Lol, okay I'll bite... why should I take your word? Who the hell are you that you know the future?

This is the exact same mentality that had people buying the FX series cards (they support DX9, DX9 is the wave of the future!) then DX9 came and then it became clear that the FX series positively sucked ass at DX9 shaders.

Really? You'd have to show me some benchmarks, because a stock 6600 vanilla is WAY SLOWER than a 9800p

what do you mean by stock? I didn't even come close to trying to push towards the max OC on the Albatron 6600 vanilla I have now and it easily matches any 9800pro I have owned.

3d03 --> 7071
3d05 --> 3175
GlExcess --> 12300
Aquamark --> 46500

I like that option better than the XFX option. No rebate to deal with and I trust chaintech more than XFX based on a couple good chaintech products I've used.

stock = not overclocked

that is your definition not mine, to me stock means no volt mods and no added cooling other than the equipment it came with. Those 6600 cores are underclocked to begin with
