Hi everyone.

I'm looking for someone who might know alot about macs or more than I do.

Is it normal for me to have to hold the power button on my ibook until the LCD lights up for it to power on?

I'm running off AC power only. My battery doesn't hold a charge.

It powers up and seems to work fine but like I said I have to hold the power button until the screen lights up. If I just push it quick it will not boot.

Any help would be great. I don't know if this is normal or not.

Not exactly normal, no. Every mac portable I have ever used (starting with a G3 PowerBook Lombard) would power on with just one good push of the button. Having to hold it is not normal, but if everything is working, then you don't really have much to worry about.

As for the battery, you might want to look on ebay, see if you can find one there.

Do you have the battery in the laptop or not? It might be possible that the system is having problems if the battery isn't there at all. I have no idea if that is true on the iBook. It is not that way on my MacBook, but I only have limited experience with G4 systems (had a 12" powerbook for a little while).

Also, you might want to check Apple's Support site, see if you can find on there how to reset the NVRAM and the PRAM. That could help as well, I think it resets the clock, but that should fix itself after the first boot.

i thought for macs you had a non-user-replaceable battery? granted i dont know much about the way they are manufactured, but i seem to recall that you had to send them in and have them replace it

For some newer models that's correct. For sane models it's not.

The only two mac portables that have non-user replaceable batteries are the MacBook Air, and the Unibody MacBook Pro 17". All the rest have had regular, plain jane user removable batteries.

I've noticed that on a lot of iBook G4s. What I would do is reset the PMU and the PRAM and see if it helps, if it doesn't, just live with it, unfotunately.

Boot the computer and hold CMD-OPT-O-F to boot into open firmware, and make sure you're holding these before you hear the chime.

When in OF, type "reset-nvram" without the quotes, and press return. Then type "reset-all", again without the quotes, and press return. Your iBook will restart and then hopefully you're good to go. You may have to reset your clock and stuff, but it's not a big deal.
