Note this cpu it uses, AMD E2-7110 is effectively amd's version of atom and is only barely faster than cherry trail. But you are getting something with flash memory, 4gbs of ram, and a 1080p ips screen in a 14" case for $200. Also remember this is a cloudblook (Windows attempt to fight Chromebooks) so there is effectively very little storage.
  • AMD E2-7110 1.8GHz Quad Core
  • AMD R2 Graphics
  • 4GB DDR3L 1600MHz Ram
  • 32GB eMMC
  • HP truVision 720P WebCam, DTS Studio Sound, Stereo Speakers
  • 802.11ac WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 + 100Mbps Lan
  • 1x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, 1x SD Card Reader
  • 1x VGA, 1x HDMI
  • 3 Cell 31 WHr Li-Ion Battery
  • 3.85 lbs (1.75 kg)
Here is the slick deal forum's thread for this $200 dollar deal where other people are commenting on it and whether it is a good deal or not.

Wow, an AMD E2 CPU that's a quad-core. Weird, I didn't think that they put quad-cores in their E-series APUs.

I have a 1.8Ghz (Beema?) AMD quad-core small-core APU in my Lenovo, and I like it well enough. It does seem faster than my J1900 Atom-based Brix mini-PC. It has a real SATA6G SSD though, along with a 1366x768 screen (15.6").

I wouldn't mind a 1080P screen in a runabout netbook / notebook, that would be nice.

Your 1.8 ghz Beema uses Puma cores, this computer uses Puma+ cores you see in Carrizo-L. We do not know if there is any difference between Puma and Puma+ in performance (see the anandtech link). In fact AMD is relatively silent on this in general, to the point they might as well employ a jedi.

Most likely it performs the same or marginally faster than your Beema machine.

I would not call a 3.85 lb computer a netbook =P but yeah it is a very basic laptop. I do not want to call it a notebook due to storage and I think the term cloudbook is applicable.

I linked this as a Hot deal a while back and got totally bashed for it. You could pre-order these from Amazon and thus a Hot deal. Didnt matter. Still got bashed.

Crazy amount of computer for $200. Throw in a $50 SSD and you've got something plenty usable.

Was yours the quad-core model? If so, I apologize if I bashed it.

My AIO PC has an AMD E1 or E2, and it's ... very slow.

I remember the conversation for I was a part of it.

https://forums.anandtech.com/thread...laptop-not-on-sale-yet.2477786/#post-38305486

In it, a user Mike64 commented that while it was laptop size, it was effectively a netbook and did not have the power of a true laptop (stuff about the cpu, soldered memory, emmc, etc). I responded that it was a craptop (a word a believed set you off), for while it was a laptop form factor, it was still netbook speed, but it was still a good deal due to stuff like the 1080p screen and some people want a 14" computer. My comments were saying that this was a good low end computer unlike the crappy low end computers with crap screens and such, yet it is not a fast cpu like you get with one of the core i series. I also said while it is a good deal personally I would rather try to save a $100 more and spend about $300 in the dell refurbished outlets for while those are refurbished they still get 3 year warranties on the business ones, and 1 year warranties on the home laptops and you can get a real ultrabook with a real processor, ssd, etc starting about $300 if you wait for a sale on the dell outlet that comes every month or so.

(Aka I was not dissing your deal, for it was a good product at $230, but just was trying to qualify it was not a full fledge laptop, a term Mike64 brought up.)

Besides saying craptop which set you off, I also said the cpu was barely better than the flagship cellphone processors. (Note this was not a diss but just was trying to establish a point of reference).

-----

After I made those comments me and Mike64 went back and forth whether it was a real ssd or emmc since the amazon page was misleading (turns out it was emmc). And then me and you (Macgyversite) went back and forth whether the cpu was barely better than many cellphone processors in high end cellphones.

Note: Me saying the cpu was barely better than high end cellphone arm processors was not a diss, it was just trying to establish expectations that this was an internet browsing computer, a cloudbook, etc, and not a full functioning laptop since Mike64 did not like the term laptop. It was just me trying to give perspective to any buyers.

-----

And for $200 or $230 it is a good deal. Not a computer I personally would buy (I prefer smaller computers for travel, if its 14" I rather just use a desktop) but good enough deal I would recommend it.

I am sorry if you did not understand my critiques on the product that you recommend and I also recommend (if the price is right).

Yep.

I remember the conversation for I was a part of it. [Etc...]
I haven't even finished looking through the questions/answer and reviews on Amazon yet, but according to a couple of answers to questions, one can install an SSD (and more RAM, too, fwtw). Given its CPU, I'm not sure how much the extra RAM would really help for most uses, but more internal/SATA storage certainly removes my only really serious objection to it, whatever one wants to call it...

PS: There are a bunch of negative reviews, but they mostly seem to be written by people who had no intention of trying to upgrade internal storage or RAM (and who apparently didn't even bother Googling the CPU identified in the product name) but nonetheless "expected" (Amazon-user-speak for "imagined or fantasized") that they'd be getting a nippy, full-blown laptop with a 1080p screen for $200... (I really don't ever know whether to laugh or cry when I read Amazon reviews...)

[ETA] PPS: Though I still think that unless the 1080p screen is the big/gest draw for a potential buyer, something like this refurbed HP Elitebook 2560P Notebook PC is still the way to go...
