13yr old girl to address Linux conference

If nothing else this is proof that what people consider intuitive is decided by what they're brought up with. It would be really funny to see how she reacts to a Windows machine since she's been using Debian all these years.

WOW. If a 13-year old can master debian, I better get to work on learning it... 😀

not a big deal, i wrote my first program in assembler when i was 7, beat that. At 10 i was doing crazy things in qbasic and c+ and compiled linux by myself. And my dad doesnt know how to use a computer.

Linux generally isn't hard anymore.

If you buy nice linux-friendly hardware and get a high quality distro like Debian you can hunker down and learn it in a few months.

OSes themselves are insanely complex, but most of the trouble comes from people just so used to Windows. It's tough when you can do things easily in Windows, but you have to learn a different way of doing it in Linux, with no apparent gain. How long has most 'computer enthusiests' used Windows? Years and years. Switching is never easy.

Well from what I heard it's going to be a multiplart presentation on recent developements in cross-platform binary executable compatabilities, reverse engineering cryptography with regards of breaking trusted computing concepts, and to show off her own little school project: "Rewriting the Linux kernel in C++ and Java", which she got a A and a new laptop computer in "what did you do last summer" non-fiction writing contest at her school.

those debian people are overrating her abilities

Of course, there's no doubt part of the reason she's speaking is because of who her father is and how old she is. But the fact that she uses Linux in any capacity is a testament to the fact that Linux isn't as hard as Windows people want you to think.

Be careful! He's only 11 now. He still has two more years to go before he gets the opportunity. 😉

By the time i was 13 i knew DOS inside and out, and was all self taught. Although up until 10, i had ALL programs installed in the root directory. When i read the thread title, i thought she was going to give a lecture on linux coding or something... now that would be impressive.
