1394a to USB 3.0 ... or USB 3.1?

Does this work? If so, known exceptions? If not, can someone explain why?

I am trying to completely eliminate Firewire from my business. Newer notebooks/ultrabooks do not have it.

Of course I would prefer an answer from experience, but a good authoritative:\ answer will suffice.

Edit before I get flamed;
I just read thru a couple of Apple forums about this. These interfaces are completely incompatible and any direct simple adapter or cable will likely cause damage to the device e/w firewire.

But, begs the question, is there any more sophisticated means of adapting?

USB uses a 5 VDC standard. Firewire can be as much as 30 vdc. This makes an adapter not workable. Apple has abandoned Firewire in favor of Thunderbolt and USB 3. Suggest you do what I have done - abandon Firewire.

This article has a good explanation of the options. None are really very good.

You might try asking the question in All Things Apple if you need more.

If you are only needing to transfer data from a Firewire mini port such as on a camera, there are adapter cables for that to USB.
