137GB limit in windows?

Hey guys... Have you experienced this?

I'm not sure if windows does have a limit on storage devices, but I tried to install windows xp with my new 160GB drive and twice I could only get 130-150 GB of drive space.

The first time i partitioned a 16GB and the rest (115GB) and was shocked.
I did it again using the Seagate program that came with my drive and it keeps saying that Windows has a 137GB limit and if i want to partition it, i need special drivers... I click on yes to proceed and it only gives me 134GB, That's a total of 150GB (missing 10Gs man). So i look at the program and it says i can make another partition with the rest of the drive ( didn't let me make a partition greater than 137 i'm thinking)

So if anyone could tell me what i need to do to get the extra 10GB i'd appreciate it.

*this is so damn annoying ... now i have 3 freakin partitions when i only wanted freakin 2 ... i'm so freakin upset ... this is the 2nd time formatting ... sh!t..asdfkasjdfl;kasjfoijoajfkjejiaslkj

Sounds like you have XP without a service pack.

If you install service pack 1 or 2, then that should fix the 137gb limit, although you'll need to recreate the second partition to see the extra hard drive space.

You may want to make a slipstreamed xp cd with the service pack already installed. Auto streamer

If your xp cd does have service pack 1 or 2 already, then I'd check the system board bios to make sure its seeing the full 160gb hard drive. If it isn't then try getting the latest bios update for your system board.

Hope this helps.

could be XP version, bios or hardware related.WITHOUT sys specs { signature ] I can only guess.

check bios for large HD support or update !

search microsoft for LARGE HARD SUPPORT or install SP2

create a partition of 20-30 gb and install windows there and when in windows go to disk managment and activate / format the remaining unused space!

You'll need a third-party tool like Partition Magic to merge the partitions. The cheaper option is to slipstream SP2 and start over from scratch.

thanks for the reply MrChad
... dang i can't afford partition magic .. i just dumped $ on my new system ...
I guess a reinstallation is not that bad ... here goes another hour ...

thanks all

*hey, for the slipstream ... i know i could put sp2 in but from microsoft it says i should wait for all the updates in windows update before installing sp2 ... so is this true or can i just install sp2 then the critical update packs @ microsoft?

Thanks again!
