Ever have a feeling like some engineers should be forced to be technicians?

I was given this board to stuff, sounded like an easy job, didn't have time yesterday so I figure I'll do it in the morning, as I come in early. I get in and start working on it. Lets see, there is three ICs, I'll start with those, notice the direction. They're all placed in a kind of repetitive arrangement, but one needs to be pointed the otherway compared to the other two. Okay, atleast it's marked (in a way that the IC covers the marking). Lets go for the 67 LEDs that dominate the board. Surface mount pads, no problem. Open up the bag, they have these long leads that will have to be clipped and bent before placing them, odd but I can handle it. Just one itty bitty little problem. Not a single one has ANY polarity marking on the board. YES! It's like gambling! How hard is it to place a polarity marking? Pretty freaking easy as all the other boards that I've had to stuff have had them. If it were one or two LEDs I'd take a shot at it, but 67 is dooming me to failure. And as the real Murpheys law states: If something can be plugged in two ways, and one of them is wrong, it will get plugged in wrong. Atleast I don't have to be going mach 4 to find that mistake out.

I wish I knew what you were talking about, so I could say if your complaint sucks or not ;)

Modeps: Imagine installing RAM in a computer, and having to place one backwards. But not today's RAM, the ones back when they were all DIPPs and could be put in backwards. Now, imagine having to plug in those lights on the front of your case, only it's more difficult, permenant, and much harder to undo, now do that with no indication on which direction is the correct one. Sixty seven times.

Can you ask the engineer who designed the board to mark up the drawing to show the polarities?

Kranky: the guy hasn't come in yet (British consultant). But laying out a board in a fashion that isn't fing stupid shouldn't be optional.
