The Mazda dealer recommends this on my 93 626 with almost 137,000mi.

Does anyone have any idea what they do and check for, and how much it might cost? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car right now, and I would expect it to be $100-$200, so if it really isn't needed I'd like to save that money!

How about a new car?

Actually, I would just change everything. New belts, new hoses (all rubber ones everywhere), bleed brakes, new rotors, change all fluids, etc.

Everything. But that is just me :) I am currently in the middle of doing this to my Zuk, and it has 66k on it. Read your owners manual :)

Call them up and ask them. I suspect it will be more than $200, however you would be well-served to get a list of the recommended services, and if you don't like the price, do whatever you can yourself, and shop around to get the other stuff done.

People often give up on preventative maintenance on older cars which may well have a longer life if they kept with it.

They dont have the "every ____ miles" setup? Look at the maintenance schedule and look at the last/largest entry and use that as a base for your "complete service" interval. Subtract those miles from 135,000, and then look at the service you should be doing for whatever miles the answer is (and the ones below it). Have those items checked and done as needed.

like if you have 90,000 service is the last one and it consists of timing belts and the such, then you would be at 45,000 mile service. Do the 45,000 mile service, 30,000 mile service (if u havent done those items), and any of the smaller service items that you need to have done/checked. This is assuming of course that you stayed on schedule (ie had all the services done about on time). Otherwise just do what you have not done yet that is listed in the maintenance service.

yeah i think the same thing. sometimes it takes a couple tries to get a good one, but once i find one, i stick with them. dealers are bad news.

Well surely if I took it to a mechanic and said "find anything that needs to be replaced" there would be hundreds and hundreds of $ of stuff that should have maintenance on. Nothing is wrong right now but is it just subjective as to if something really needs replacing?
