131watt peltier only cooling Duron 650 to 55F?

My bro just bought a 131watt peltier with .25" copper coldplate from an Ebäy auction and I'm not entirely sure, but I think he may have gotten ripped off. The guy who sold it to him, said it was 131watt peltier. My bro has it hooked it all up now his setup is running at 55F-70F? He even remounted it to make sure it was coming in contact with the slug. Shouldn't the temps be lower?

I was just wondering.

btw: I know for a fact the heatsink/fan isn't the problem.

Honestly, there is NO air cooling that can dissipate 200W of heat.

a 131W peltier on a Duron would dissipate nearly 200W.

First of all, most ATX powersupplies cannot power a 131W peltier. It would require about 11A on the 12V line which would fry most systems, even if it did not have any other components. You would require one of those 500W server supplies or an indipendent, high current supply.

200W of power might actually be hard for a water cooler to dissipate. You'd have do have a DAMN well constructed cooling block and radiator. I would recommend using some kind of vapor phase cooling with this setup but Freon has too high a boiling point. Maybe a vapor phase cooler with an alcohol solution would be best.

BTW, peltiers are rated both at wattage and temperature differential. Be careful you didn't buy a cheap peltier that can run a high current but won't do much temp differential. More expensive and higher quality peltiers have a greater delta-T (temp differential).

Honestly, if you seriously think running a 131W peltier will help you much unless you have studied some Thermodynamics, you are mistaken.

Take off the peltier and go buy an GlobalWin fan and live with that.

Even a FOP38 from GlobalWin couldn't dissipate all the heat from a 50W peltier.

I hope you have taken adaquate condensation precautions or you're likely to fry both your CPU and motherboard.

Good Luck

Sincerly,
Eric

if you got a watercooling setup, it may be able to cool it enough to be effective, but you're gonna get alot of condensation.

It's not the case temp, that may make his case hot but on the point of contact with the pelt the cpu core would still be cold. I'd say it's probably either not a good peltier, it's not set up as good as it could be, or the power supply can't give it enough juice. Since you siad your bro remounted it and made sure it was making good contact, it's probably your power supply.
