My old QX6850 was totally stable and it would reach as high as 86C with no problems, it would have issues once it reached 92C or more. (Where I live, the norm is between 82F and 90F all year mind you)

My current CPU never reaches 80C, so I don't know how much punishment it might get before having issues.
 
It seems buying an Athlon X4 620 and overclocking it to the sky is a killer deal. It gets a sick performance number overall.

Man my poor X2 3800 is getting old. It's running at X2 5000 specs now.
And even if it somehow did 4 Ghz it would still be slow for nowadays' stuff.
 
my opteron 165 @ 4800+ is looking a little short 🙁

i don't want to buy an 860 and then have next month come around with 32nm quads tho 🙁

Intel hasn't announced any 32nm quads for Socket 1156 for all of 2010 as far as I recall. If you want to futureproof your platform, go with Core i7 930 and Socket 1366 then. We may see 32nm quads on socket 1156 down the line, but I don't see them being significantly faster than a 3.9-4.2ghz overclocked Core i7 860s.

As you can see from the review chart, more or less all Core i7s are close to each other (other than 980X :awe🙂. Therefore, you really see most significant performance increases in generational leaps --> C2D --> C2Q Penryn -> Core i7. So I imagine Sandy Bridge/Bulldozer will bring a beating to current architectures in a similar fashion next year.
