Our last few national tragedies have all resulted in misinformation, chaos due to our lack of communication. The media has a very big part in this since we all tend to follow what the guy in the suit has to say on tv.
There are politicians that would like to increase their popularity by being the first to announce supposedly good news irregardless of the availability of any factual material.

What I don't get is why they're so pissed off at people involved for saying they were found alive. What are they going to do, sue them for emotional stress for saying they were alive then having to bring down the hammer that they were actually dead? Miscommunication happens in crisis... Sure emotions are running high but the person quoted in TFA seems to be wanting somebody to blame for the loss of their loved one.

Sensationalism sells, and the simple rumor that 12 were alive was reason enough (for CNN and other news broadcasters) to broadcast this story.

but if you are a reputable news source, you should be 99.9% sure what you are putting on your website is accurate.

Maybe they were 99.9% sure and it turned out that the truth fell in the other ..01%

If I was the one reporting I'd wait until I actually saw the 12 alive people. How would you like a Doctor to say that a loved one made it through surgery alright only to say 3 hours later that "oops. I read the wrong chart"... I mean I understand that stuff like this happens and that people were spreading the news that 12 were alive, but this sort of miscommunication shouldnt happen. Reputable news sources carrying that misinformation should know better. Word of mouth is one thing, but I'd also wait to actually see the people alive. AND any reporting I'd mention that it was unconfirmed.

I dont exactly know who's at fault for the miscommunication but I do know that 12 families are devastated because of it.

Sorry, I didnt realize it was the governor that got the information wrong. He should have made certain that it was 12 alive before coming out and saying it. If anyone, he's at fault for this whole they're alive/they're dead thing, not the media. I take my previous posts back.

Blame game aside, this is a sad news story and I feel bad for the miners' families.

Look, when it comes to this magnitude of a story, you better be damn sure that what you are reporting are facts. Reporters arent supposed to make rumors headlines. That's what the tabloids are for. CNN messed up whether it was due to misinformation or something else. It's one thing to be the "first to break the story", but if you are a reputable news source, you should be 99.9% sure what you are putting on your website is accurate.

The governor of the freaking state confirmed that these guys were alive. Who do you want CNN to call, the president? No, CNN did NOT mess up. They were given information from official sources and they reported it. They were not being sensationalistic, they were reporting the news that they were told.

Stop being such an idiot. If you had one once of clue as to how the media worked you would not be posting what you did.

If you continue reading the thread after I posted that, I took all i said before back as I realized I was misinformed. I wasnt aware it was the governor that said it. I now realize it's not the media's fault and I apologized which not many members here do when they realize they are wrong. Relax and have a :beer:
