Yes I'm buying either the Lite On 16x or 12x from Newegg.com! The main reason I want a Liteon drive is cost. 72$ for the 12x and 92$ for the 16x and I already have burning software. I am burning nothing but data for backup and divx movies. My question is how much better is 16x than a 12x? Is 16 x an overkill? Is it worth it? I know 20 bucks isn't that much, but I am trying to keep costs to a minimum and still have decent hardware!

I'd go for the 12x version. I recently installed one for a friend, and boy, was it FAST compared to his old 4x HP drive. The difference between a 12x and a 16x is perhaps a minute for writing a cd, hardly something I want to pay extra money for...

I might get the 16x just on principle! I hate if 6 months from my burner was considered far too slow. I had this happpen a 5 years ago or so. I remember I had a quad speed cdrom and then less than 3 months 16x was out! though looking back I know that programs are written to use nothing over a quad speed. It sure helps to have speed when ripping cdes though!

No I don't but I'm sure you can dig it up that the 12x burners use Sanyo chips for their Burnproof, but 16x and newer Liteon makes their own chips which I read are the equivalent of Justlink technology which is apparently slightly less reliable.
