12V LED off 12V battery?

I have a 12V 500 mA LED light. Instead of running off and AC adapter can I just hook it up to a 12V battery? What do I have to do so I don't fry anything?

as long as it has a current limiting resistor, should be ok

judging by the spec you gave '12V 500mA' - it sounds like it already does

The high current might kill it. Probably need a resistor of some value.

I think that means it's rated for 500mA current maximum, so you need a resistor to limit current to 500mA

So how do I figure out what kind of resistor I need? Or, if I have to ask, should I "not try this at home"?

I can solder stuff together pretty well, I just need explicit instructions.

12V LED? There has to be a resistor built in, 12eV is a HUGE bandgap and would put you well into the UV spectrum. If it's not a UV LED, it likely has a built in resistor.
