12Gb available 7.99 usable (what my computer says)

Ok my computer has 12gb of memory placed in it. But it says there is only 7.99Gb usable. What the heck does this mean.
Where did my other 4 Gigs go.

I have a dedicated video card. Its the 4Gb gtx 680. But its dedicated so it should not affect video memory at all.

So whats going on guys.

Are you seeing this "7.99" in the BIOS, or in WIndows? If you're in Windows, what amount of RAM does your BIOS show?

Is your machine overclocked? if so how much memory does it show if you reset bios back to default then boot?

So based on this link OP is using Windows Basic Home 64 bit that is why he is seeing only 8GB?

I have windows 7 64 bit ultamite edition so I should be able to max out at 12g

Under the bios it says I have 8 million under extended. It also says I have 639 bast memory.
Then there is a total between the two

You answered my second question about the version of windows but not the first.

Ok So I think that issue is fixed It is now showing 12g in bios and windows.
I think the graphics card is using up its dedicated 4 gigs and 5 gigs of the ram.

glad you got it working!

The video card will using its own Vram but windows 7 views it as a shared resource.

There is a proper technical explanation for it but I'll let someone else post it. haha it saturday and got mad cleaning to do at my house.

i'm sure if you google it you will find the answer also.
