128meg high density ram

Just curious if I'm like the last to notice or something, but when 128 meg sdram sticks start coming as high density modules? I picked up a 128 meg pc133 stick of PNY memory to toss in an old linux box with a 440bx chipset and apparently its a high density stick..... Is this a trend I missed out on or something new? 🙂

I've noticed that as well. Most of the "generic" chips on the low-end of the price range have been going high-density, followed slowly by more of the higher-end modules. When I tried to upgrade an original Pentium 430VX motherboard with more RAM, I ran into the same roadblock. My guess is that it's just cheaper and more convenient. Most people are using barebones Pentium III or higher chipsets these days, and they honestly don't care about getting quality memory. Myself, I do, but unfortunately the market goes by what people are buying...

I didn't even know there were high density 128meg sticks. I figured 128 megs of anything would run in on a 440bx board 😉 I guess its time to order some crucial!

This is so-called "High density" is not that "High density"

"High density" in the old BX day means the ram chip is 32x4 configuration instead of normal 16x8.
Intel BX chipset doesn't support 32x4 type ram chip.

The real meaning of "High density" is just the size of the ram chip, in the case of 256Mbit (32x8 or 64x4 or 16x16) ram chip vs 128Mbit (16x8 or 32x4 or 8x16) ram chip, the 256Mbit is high density.

My Aopen AX63Pro Slot 1 motherboard cant take high density. I got a cheap stick of 256 HD, and the motherboard only detected 128. Not to mention my comp locked up and gave me loads of erros when using that shitty generic ram
