128mbs of ram enough for Windows XP?

K62 500mhz, 128mbs of PC100 ram .. can this PC run Windows XP?

Yes, 128 MB is enough and is not too bad, although 256 or above will be much better for running various applications. 500mhz is a little on the slow side but if you just want an internet/email machine there's no big problem. The official requirements are available here:

I've noticed significant differences in performance between W2K and XP on a 128MB machine. Unless there is some pressing need to run XP (Remote Desktop, Bluetooth), then I would stick with W2K. I ran XP for a while on a PIII 1Ghz Coppermine with 128MB of RAM, it was slightly painful. The default OS working-set is close to 128MB, so using any significant apps at all results in significant swapping. W2K can "live" in as little as 64MB.

I have P3 867 Mhz 128 Mb WinXP, turned off all the visuals and am pretty much satisfied - Internet, Office suite are doing perfectly well, the only thing is to tune the usage patterns - don't open too much applications simultaniuosly, don't switch users , no new super-duper games (altough I play CounterStrike without any problems )

128MB is enough to do basic web browsing and perhaps email in XP, but not much else.

I was helping someone with their lappie that had XP and 128MB. Pure torment to use it :| Head over to FS/T and rustle up a stick of PC100 maybe

maybe it can run but I sooner put that $80 to an upgrade or a new system

my experince is that 128mb isn't really enough even if it were using DDR type memory with a newer system.

I suggest over 256mb, 512mb is a good for most users to run xp the way it's meant to be run

also there is the hard drive and hard drive controller speed that will affect the pagefile
and you need a decent video card if you want the shadows and such on the menus

first generation AGP might not even give you 32bit color and 16bit makes a lot of the XP bmp wallpapers look bad

Cheaper to upgrade the RAM than to upgrade the OS....

Maybe if you turned all the extras off it would run alright. But I've used a few standard installs with antivirus running and a couple other taskbar apps and it was pretty rough. And when it came time to run Bloatus Bloats (Lotus Notes) it was just plain brutal. I felt like I was back on a win98 box with 16mb of ram and 12 AIM variants running in the toolbar. But Bloatus Bloats is a pig, machines with 256mb don't even like it much.
