128mb vs 256mb

Is there really that much of a difference when its price vs performance? I am trying to fing a nice 256mb card but they are way out of my budget. Would i just be better off getting a 128 6600 or a 256 9800?

256MB of memory will not help your games much if the card that has that much memory is anything weaker than a 9800pro.

The 128mb 6800s are DDR, not DDR3. Still better than a 256mb 9800 tho.

Wrong cards there Zakee. Same core, both 128bit
256bit memory allows for more bandwidth, meaning you can sustain higher performance at higher resolutions and eye candy. A good comparison is the 6600GT and the 6800NU. The first is a 128bit card, and the second is a 256bit card. They both perform similarly at lower resolutions, but once you start upping things, the 6800 pulls away due to having more memory bandwidth.

Big difference? It depends on what cards you are looking at.

so pretty much a 128mb 128bit card that has high mhz for core and mem should be alright. I am looking for some like these:

The Gigabyte 6600GT will be significantly faster. It has a much higher core and memory frequency, resulting in much more fill rate and memory bandwidth. The extra ammount of memory on the 9800 won't make much of a difference on the 128bit model. You'd have to go with a 256bit 9800pro model for 256MB of memory to be more effective. Actually, the 128bit 9800pro shouldn't even be called a pro. That card is nothing more than an overclocked 9500 pro with extra memory.

With all price considerations thought over...I'd take the Gigabyte even though its higher priced. The performance difference will be noticeable.

ok cool thxs for the answer, but what about a refurbished 6600GT I am somewhat leading towards this direction they are up to 50$ cheaper and I dont really dont care about cables and software just the card.

I've never dealt with purchasing refurbished items. I'm too afraid to buy them.
Most of the stories I've heard, however, are problem free. There are always the bad apples out there.

I would love a 6800 but its just out of my budget. I just spent nearly 1k$ on new computer parts.

I haven't really seen any benchmarks that prove your point. The 6800 Non-Ultras to my knowledge use DDR while the 6600GT is using highly clocked GDDR3 ....

Though I could be wrong.... I've seen both card roughly scoring even...
