128MB RADEON 8500s WORTH IT?

ok im sick and tired of getting choppy fps on my radeon 64 with CS @ 1024x768 and 2x FSAA.... i like FSAA and want to run at least 2x with ALL games be it D3D or OGL... my next investment is prolly gonna be an 8500 and i heard that the only good of having that extra 64mb ram was for FSAA and things of the sort? if i can spare the extra bucks and am a FSAA freak is it worth it?

should i wait for R300? (cuz if im gonna wait im not gonna wait for something minor like R250... im goin the whole 9 yards!)

I was unaware that there were even any benchmarks for comparison between the 64 and 128 meg 8500 card. If there are, could you point me to them? Last I heard the 8500 was about 10 to 15% faster with the 128 meg card (mostly rumor though). Thanks

It's only slighty faster in higer res. There are no FSAA speed improvements either. Honestly, there is no GPU out there that's powerfull enough to run games smoothly in FSAA at resolutions higher than 1024X768, ATI and N-Vidia's FSAA are crap anyways. You should wait.

There is only 1 or 2 reviews like that out there. I can't remember where they even were, check anand news history.

If you want 4X FSAA at 1600x1200 with max details, then I'd go for it.... otherwise I wouldnt bother, especially not if your only running 2X FSAA at 1024x768.

Are you sure it was the 8500 128 meg version reviewed? I checked the archives and couldn't find anything. Thanks

Get the 128 MB version unless it's significantly more expensive. Although the benchmarks don't show much of difference you'll get smoother and more consistent framerates and you'll get less texture swaps and stuttering in heavy areas.

Benchmark figures don't show much of the true story.

<< here is a commentary on the 128mb version i found. no benchmarks, but might be some info in there. did not read, so don' t blame me for anything

i have a question for u franguinho ....

how can u have bad performance on CS with ur radeon 64mb if i get good performance on my radeon32LE on 1024x768 openGL on winXP? CS doesn't seem to me to be a demanding game that would cause u to upgrade ur video card.

FSAA is the answer... really lags me up! 🙁 and hell no im not upgrading for CS!! LOL
im building a new comp for college and want to get an awesome video card and well i like 128mb... not sure if its worth it...

thx BFG10K thats what i was thinking... see the prices and if its not a huge difference then why not, eh?

I wouldn't pay for it. By the time the 128mb is really useful, you'll have moved on to something better. So take the money you save and earmark it for your next card. I'm not sold on the claims that larger memory sizes prevent texture thrashing, either, because no one here has shown definitive evidence that current games cache data like that to begin with, but just IMO.

i suppose by the time i actually move into my dorm and order the parts there will be something better out... but thats what happens all the time... ya can NEVER have the latest hardware EVER!! LOL serious tho... as soon as ya buy something theres a newer and better alternative... only monitors, sound card n speakers and like stuff like that is OK but video card... processors... geez... i was so proud when i got my slot athlon 800 and before ya knew it there were socket tbirds 🙁

edit: PS - i like your avatar 😉

Hehe, don't sweat it man, when I went to college, I dropped $3K on a Pentium Pro 200 with 32mb of ram and a 4mb Matrox Millenium. God, six years ago and I still haven't graduated. 😉

Agreed and there will be a benefit from that extra VRAM.

Also I'd suggest that you wait for the Ti4s and Radeon 8800s to be available on the store shelves before making a final decision.

Yesss!! because even if i wont buy the 8800, it will invariably cause all other radeon's prices to drop! 🙂
