128MB of PC133 or 192MB of PC100 in Win2k?

Thinking of upgrading and just wanted to know what to do. (Don't suggest 192MB of PC133, thats not an option. Unless you want to GIVE it to me). Also which one is better in Win98 SE?

Hi,
192mb would be better in most circumstances, however ther are a few questions that you need to address. First, do you need pc133? PC133 is used for 133mhz FSB which is usually usued on PIII systems or newer Athlons. PC100 is 100mhz FSB and should be used for almost all other CPUs. Also, which ram is better? I have a strip of 128mb Micron PC100 that I run at 133mhz FSB and it works better in some instances than a strip of generic 256mb PC133 I have. The basic rule of thumb is more=better, but make sure you don't need the PC133 before you install the pc100 and make sure you are using the better ram because 128mb will work fine and probably better than 192mb if the ram is significantly better. Hope this helps.

It's a PIII with a FSB of 133 It's all generic stuff so the PC100 will not run at PC133. They are Both Cas 3. I only have 2 Dimm slots, both have 64MB of PC100. I have a stick of 128MB PC133 which I can replace one Dimm with, leaveing me with 192 running at PC100. Or I can take both 64MB sticks out and run the 128 at PC133.

my suggestion would be match the memory clock with the FSB. running asynchronous does work, but something in my gut makes me want to stay away from it. 128MB is a good amount of memory. are you going to be using photoshop? 3d animation? do you like to serve the games at your LAN gaming parties? these are all reasons to go with more memory, but faster (not to mention GOOD) memory almost makes up for the difference going from 128 to 192 makes. just my humble opinion.

btw... 128 megs of pc133 sells for around 50 bucks. sell the 128 of pc100 you have and buy some more pc133. 🙂 just a suggestion.

Hi again,
It sounds like you are upgrading an existing configuration, right? I'm confused in that you say it has 64mb of pc100, but it is a PIII running at 133fsb. Whatever the case, make sure you are running at 133fsb, unless you have a 100mhz PIIIE. If this is the case, just add the ram and yuo're all gold.
As Always,
D
