1280x960 or 1400x1050 in Windows 2000 with a Radeon?

I was searching through that old thread and it seems nobody got it going in Windows 2000. Can it be done? If not I'll have to use 1600x1200 which is not ideal for me.

1280x1024 just drives me up the wall for 2D. :|

Erm, sorry for the ignorance, but why does 1280 x 1024 drive you up the wall? :)

The aspect ratio of a monitor is 4:3. 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1400x1050, and 1600 are all 4:3 aspect ratios and thus all fit the monitor perfectly. 1280x1024 is an oddball 5:4 aspect ratio and thus all pictures are distorted with a 1280x1024 display.

Matrix and 3dfx (dunno about nVidia) include this 1280x960 resolution as a default resolution. It is strange that ATI doesn't, considering that they pay so much attention to 2D. IMHO, 1280x960 is the most appropriate resolution for some 17" monitor and some 19" monitor users, while 1400x1050 is the most appropriate for some 19" monitor users as well.

Ahhhh.. thanks for the very informative reply. Looks like I'm going to move to 1280 x 960 now. :)

The only way I can get 1400x1050 is with Powerstrip 3, and that's with my Geforce2. I don't think Radeon's supports custom resolutions w/ Powerstrip 3.

I'm running 1400 x 1050 on my 19 inch on a Radeon under windows 2000, no problems. I used powerstrip 3 and it took me a while to get the settings just right but its working great now at 85 hz. The trick is to go to powerstrip and add a custom resolution so you dont have to have powerstrip running all the time.

I got it in XP but not win2k. I think they use the same names in the registry, let us know when you find it.

it is a pain, but much like reformatting/reinstalling needs to be done only one in a while and when it gets working its great.

Eug,

I forced a custom setting with my old Geforce2 MX. I just downloaded the drivers and manipulated one of the .inf files to include a 720x480 resolution just for DVD viewing (so there was no scaling). I just had to copy the settings for 800x600 but change the entries from 800 to 720 and 600 to 480.

Maybe you could try something similar with the Radeon (I'd check with somebody first though...I wouldn't want you to blow a monitor or anything;)).
