So maybe I'm a bit behind the times here, but I recall 1280x1024 being a somewhat standard resolution option for CRTs. However, a few games I've played with recently didn't have 1280x1024 as an option (instead offering 1280x960 or 1280x800-something), and one of them had 1280x1024 but it had "LCD" in parenthesis next to it. What's the dealio?

I can't remember which games they were. One of them was Battlefield 2142.

1280x1024 is a "standard" i.e. native resolution for most (non-widescreen/regular) LCDs with 17" and 19" diagonal. This makes it a very common resolution for LCD users. It is, however, "non-standard" in that it has a 5:4 ratio, whereas most (non-widescreen/regular) resolutions from CRT days are 4:3 (i.e. 1024x768). Using a 5:4 resolution directly onto a 4:3 screen will produce a small amount of stretching distortion.

The 1280x960 resolution is 4:3, and so suitable for a standard CRT without stretching.
The 1280x800 resolution is 16:10, and suitable for (some) widescreen TVs/monitors.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've been using 1280x960 in those games, so I guess I picked wisely (I have a 19" CRT). I used to run 1024x768, but I've upgraded enough lately that I've been starting to bump it up.

I had noticed that as well. F.E.A.R, for example, complains 1280x1024 is not a "supported" resolution. Thanks for clearing that up.

It was an industry standard though. True it doesn't "fit" on a 4:3 CRT, but it is what was most commonly used. SXGA is defined as 1280x1024. 1280x960 technically isn't an industry standard for some odd reason.

For a 19" CRT, 1600x1200 would probably be a better choice for gaming.
