After becoming ecstatic at my acceptance into the Marince PLC program last week, I was informed today that I am on suspension until such time that I am no longer taking Paxil. The doctor said that it would take approx. 6 weeks to ween me off of it. Today is a sucky day. I have to leave my class and join in with a bunch of people I don't know, and repeat all my training. Granted it's only a week's worth, but the first week is the hardest. :(

did they give you a reason why the Paxil is not acceptable?
sounds discrimnatory to me.

Well that blows, but at least you're not completely out of the program....just delayed. Hang in there. :)

Depression and Anxiety. Discrimation? No. I've heard of this happening with many other types of medication of this type. Effexor, Clonidine, Ritalin..etc.

good luck. Paxil is used by you for...?

Stomach trouble due to stress. I'd rather live with the stomach pain than not be able to complete my training.

It's against their policy to allow anyone taking an antidepressant, for whatever reason, to complete training. Apparently I shouldn't have even been accepted until I was off of it.

dtyn,

I understand that you are upset and it sucks..but as a general rule, its a bad thing to have people in the military with emotional problems/disorders. I'm not saying that you have them or anything like that, but in general that is what paxil is used to treat. Best of luck in the future.

In the military, you cannot carry a weapon when your on certain antidepressants because it can impair your judgement.

I understand, and agree with their reasoning, whatever it may be. It just sucks. I hate waiting.

ahhh, so they would rather someone stayed depressed and not on any medicine that helps them, and be able to carry a weapon. that makes sense

I hope you can find another med that will take care of your stomach and not prevent you from going through with it. It seems you will anyway, but you might as well not have stomach pain and screaming DIs...

Well, considering that anti-depressants to alter your state of mind, it's not safe to have them carrying weapons. If someone is having a bout of depression that can be fixed with temp. use of antidepressants, the military is fine with it. But, if they have to be on them all the time, they will get discharged because they aren't world-wide deployable - meaning that the use of antidepressants prevents them from being useful to the military. If you can't carry a weapon, you're of no use.

That pretty much sums up the requirements to be in the military, whether it be physically or mentally able.

They are hoping to identify whether you can cope without your meds... not exactly easy to get people their prescription antidepressants when you are stationed over in Iraq.

So my stomach will hurt, no big deal. It's a different kind of stress anyway.
