Massive demand

We learned that DAAMIT has sold as much as 125.000 chips in the last three weeks since it launched but the market still wants and urges for more.

A few AMD chaps said that the plans is to ship as many as 500K chips until the end of the year and this is an impressive number but it looks like ATI and Nvidia will sell everything as people do need to by new cards to play Crysis or World in Conflict or any other new game.

Many cool games are out and not enough cool new graphics cards are available, that's why we hope that ATI and Nvidia will shape up and have more of them available.

It's fudzilla... However, it's nice if it is true (especially if rumors about 50K 8800GTs are also true), AMD/ATI really need it to stay in business.

With almost 2b in cash, they wont have to worry too much at the moment. Having lots of debt doesnt mean you drown next month, you know.

However, the ATI business was in the green (as the only segment) last quarter, so this will definitely make things look much better in the immediate future.

Good for them.

Doesn't seem surprising considering 8800GT's have been out of stock for awhile and 3850's took nvidia's 8600GT/GTS market. It's kind of refreshing to hear some sort of good news from AMD/ATI even if this is FUDzilla.

Make's sense, it's near impossible to get hold of any 38x0 series card here in Australia at the moment. We've got plenty of orders placed for them, especially the 3850 series cards with 512mb...just can't seem to get hold of them.

Even I have to wait a while just to get my hands on a pair of 3870's....

but it's much worse for those wanting 8800GT's here, we haven't had them in stock for almost a month.

Well, i for one can say that i'd be purchasing an ATI 3850 if i didn't already have my 8800GTS. Great bang for the buck.

I'm really glad to see ATI/AMD doing so well with these cards. And no, it's not because i'm a fanboy, but because i love competition. :)

any chance that we will see the HD3850 or HD3870 selling for the MSRP in the near future?

I would like to upgrade, but I don't HAVE too right now..

I just looked a 5-6 of the large web hardware sites, all listed 2-5 models of the cards from various makers, but only had 1 or in some cases none on hand for shipment.

seem to be a under supply problem, intentional or otherwise.

Not really. Overall it won't have a huge amount of impact on them since the graphics division isn't a significant proportion of the overall business, but money is money, and always good.

not in a year ... but in *three weeks* .. yes .. it is cash ... and 7-digits profit for less than a month ... and AMD needs cash

withOUT ATi being profitable, there would be less money for Gfx R&D :p
... so if it's true, it is very good news ... since it appears the 3800 series is not getting less popular

This news probably wouldn't hurt relations with the AMD stockholders, either.

it seems pretty clear that amd is winning the current round of the graphics war. They are building their cards on a smaller process and they didn't have any of the problems that have plauged them with recent gpu AND cpu releases. This just MIGHT be enough to get them through to the next round of cpu releases, but I doubt it. They are simply too far gone with phenom/etc, and things appear to be getting worse instead of better. The tlb problem could very well be the nail in the coffin. I only hope that the ati division either gets spun off or they at least find a way to keep releasing driver updates. :(

AMD has been bleeding cash out its ass at about 500 million a quarter.
