120hz vs IPS

I currently own an HP LP3065 that is starting to get old by tech specs. I notice the lag in fps and a few other things, but its never really been a huge deal. I have been considering stepping down from the 2560x1600 arena and getting a 120hz 27in monitor that only does 1080p and supports 3D. I don't see anything that is IPS or E-IPS in that area only what appears to be TN panels. I love my monitor just not the heat it puts out and the lag I am getting in some fast paced FPS. Thanks for the input.

Been a few threads I have seen about people not getting over 85hz with that monitor.

It's all in the setup. 85hz seems to be limited to AMD/ATI cards without powerstrip set up correctly. You own a GTX 680 which has been tested to work up to and over 120hz.

Just played about 10 minutes on a TN panel that my wife uses and its night and day to my slow ass IPS. Im seriously going to start looking into the catleaps this weekend.

Its the input lag that kills me on my monitor. The monitor she uses has a 5ms lag, mine is like 12ms. Its quite noticeable. Of course my monitor has better color and is easier on the eye, but I am seriously considering a swap to something 120hz for FPS gaming.

I noticed a huge difference goings from a 2ms TN panel that had less than a frame of input lag to a 2ms 120hz TN panel. 120hz is the best upgrade an FPS player can make provided you have a computer capable of running whatever game you are playing over 80-90 FPS. Under that I start to notice some weird frame skipping and things are much less smooth.

Its pretty simple, if you game, get 120hz. Period. I dont know why anyone would get anything not 120hz for gaming. I just bought a cheap Viewsonic 2268wm 120hz and it was only $210. Best monitor ive owned yet. Its definitely noticeable over 60hz. Makes the screen a pleasure to look at.

2ms > perdy colors as I get shot

OP: Iiyama ProLite G2773HS

27 inches, 1080p, 120Hz, 1ms response time. No perdy colors or strange view angles though.

Dunno if the screen is any good, but I guess it's something you could check out.

I may look into that screen balla. I dont know about stepping down in size from my 30" though. I figure my i5 2500k and GTX 680 can run most everything at a good if not great framerate. Runs my two games I play most COD MW3 and DOD-S at around 100+ at all times. DOD-S is normally 280-300FPS.

I think 27" is too big for 1080p, but that's just me :)

Your problem is you want the best of both worlds, and you simply can't have it :(

1920x1080 is the same picture at 21 inches as it is at 30 inches, the difference is the pixels are considerably larger on a 30 inch screen. 27 inches requires at least 1440, I wouldn't go higher than 23 or 24 inches for 1080p.

Edit: I should ask, are you playing at a computer desk, or are you playing it like a console in a living room?

- 3D will require you to put out twice as many frames .. so you're roughly talking about
2x1600x1080, which comes back to the neighborhood you're trying to leave. Just saying ..

Im at a desk. I agree about 1080p at large format. It looks like poo. To the 3d comment. I want to play games like sonic generations and some platformers/ action games in 3d. Not mys competitive fps.

If only 2ms was all it really was.

I'd rather take the small hit in pixel response and pay the premium for superior color accuracy, viewing angles, and uniformity of H-IPS. I use TN, PVA, and IPS displays on a daily basis. Gaming and non-gaming, IPS wins.

There is a 42ms difference between the TN and slowest h-ips, is that a few?

I'm sold though, if you can explain to me how having slightly better shades of colors and wider viewing angles benefits a gamer more than having a internet connection with 42ms less latency.

Some people like quality? Besides, the NEC monitors are horrible examples for gaming. I doubt there's much gaming done on the NEC professional series monitors.

Since hand picking facts to sway opinion is a favorite around here, I'll pick my own.

TN - Acer GD235HZ: 73ms total input lag
H-IPS - DoubleSight DS-277W: 82ms total input lag
Total difference: 9ms

Sweet. I run the GD235HZ

It's a matter of opinion, no reason to argue it really.

You prefer pretty colors and viewing from strange angles, I prefer not to pay $1000 for a screen that isn't as smooth and is slower to respond.

In the end I personally went with a larger FoV for my FPS gaming experience. I'd rather have peripheral vision and more view space than pretty colors for 1/3 of the price.

In the case of the OP: IPS doesn't offer 120Hz, so not only is it not perceived to be as smooth, it's slower to respond and does not offer the feature of 3D vision for his other games.

At this point since the OP has money, I'd suggest having both screens, because both are better at some things than the other, so why not have both?
