120hz monitor help

I just bought a new Viewsonic VX2268wm 120hz monitor. I am coming from a CRT so, this is the first time ive had to "set up" a 120hz flat screen. I run an AMD MSI 5770 with 12.1 cats.

Need a little help here. I run my deskstop at 1680x1050(native) @ 120hz. I am having an issue at below native resolutions though.. It seems every non-native resolution I set does not run at 120hz no matter what I do. Anyone have an idea why? I want to game at below the native resolution. I have tried a variety of other resolutions and its always at 60hz.

I have set force refresh rate in Cats to 120, that does nothing. I have set the force refresh rate to use same refresh rate as desktop, that does nothing.

Also, what is a program that will display current refresh rate and resolution? I noticed in Skyrim, even when my res is set to something other than native, in the monitor information setting, it still shows the deskstop resolution @ 120hz, but its obviously not at that resolution or that hz.

No help? Damn....

Anyways, I have narrowed this down to being AMD video card related, driver related or Operating system related, maybe a combo of those.

Luckily I have a family member who also owns a 120hz monitor so, I was able to toss(figuratively speaking) my 120hz viewsonic into his setup and every game works at 120hz just fine, so it is not the monitor.

Searching google I found some comments about 120hz monitors and it seems a few people noted it being an AMD/ATI related issue. Apparently Nvidia cards are better for 120hz setups....Go figure... I may update my OS to win7 to see if that fixes it but, bleh.

Nah, ive already tested that, it does 120hz at any resolution. I think all 120hz monitors do. I know the Benq model does too. Id assume they all do.

And ya this monitor is like the Viewsonic version of the Samsung model. They are pretty close heh. I dont know what the issue is here. I am trying to find someone who runs a 120hz monitor and AMD video card.

Well I don't know if this is overly useful but..

I do have a 120Hz monitor I've been messing around with to check out the tech. Its a Samsung S23A950D and for a video card I have a Sapphire 7970.

After reading your thread I started droping the resolution down from the native 1920x1080. The only thing the Samsung does is default to 60Hz aftere a resolution change.. but it will go to 120Hz at the other resolutions when I set it to 120 and apply.

So at least on my monitor and 7970... 120Hz works at lower resolutions. *edit* To make sure I was at 120Hz.. I simply logged into WoW in fullscreen mode with Vsync on. The FPS is pinned at 120 at each resolution. If I set refresh to 60 its at 60. So it seems to work at 120 for every resolution based on that.

Right. I am pretty sure they all do 120hz at any resolution just maybe not by default, thats what I meant though.

Interesting. What version Cats are you running? And, is there any chance I could have you take a screenshot of what settings you have enabled/disabled in like the "Display Options" tab and Digital panel (DVI) --> Attributes/Scaling Option tabs? This crap is annoying. A brand new 120hz monitor and I cant play any games at 120hz. 😛

I am starting to think its my video card but, man, a MSI Hawk 5770 is fairly new and supports dual-link dvi so.....that should mean it does 120hz. Its not like this is a dirt cheap super bargain bin video card. http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R5770-Hawk.html Not to mention I was just running 120hz on my CRT monitor with it via VGA cable.

Maybe it's just my monitor that only does 120Hz at its native resolution...or maybe it does it for all resolutions. I could be wrong either way.

Just wanted to update. I have solved this issue.

The problem was related to being on WinXP with an AMD video card/Drivers. I have only tested in leagueoflegends so far, but I updated to Win7 last night and now I am actually able to play at 120hz. And yes, it runs 120hz at all resolutions as far as I can tell.

Let it be known, do not run a 120hz monitor with an AMD video card on WinXP. 🙂

I was meaning to upgrade to Win7 when I got this monitor anyways so, it was for the best.
