Have the Samsung S27A950D 27" 120Hz 1920x1080 and love how clean and fast the picture is, however I wouldn't mind more screen, the 2560x1600 I'm liking that idea a good amount.

I've been using the 27" 120Hz for gaming for some time now, is the 30" Dell U3011 going to lag with 60Hz Refresh rate? I do some graphics (web) as well.

Here are the two monitors:

I could see the attractions in both ways, but the truth is they serve completely different purposes. I know that many here would like to have their cake and eat it too (myself included), but it is a trade-off you will have to make one at the cost of the other, for now.

Many who have experienced 120 Hz would not want to go back to 60 Hz, I hear. Likewise, for some others who own 30" screens, it is unthinkable to "downgrade" to lower resolution with lesser visual fidelity.

There is no right or wrong answer here. Both the products you linked are very high-quality, and it is up to how/for what you like to use your computer.

You might notice some lag or ghosting etc. I don't know how sensitive to it you are though. I notice some, but it's not really distracting for me.

I own both a 30" 2560x1600 60Hz IPS panel and a 24" 1920x1080 120Hz TN panel.

The 30" being IPS is higher quality in terms of viewing angles, colour reproduction, resolution and general image quality and without a doubt is better for doing colour sensitive work, the additional resolution gives great screen space for graphics work.

However the 120Hz panel is unbeatable for how smooth fast paced action games are, moving from a faster 120Hz panel to a slower 60Hz one is going to be noticeable for sure, it will be worse in some games such as fast paced shooter, racing and action games, less so in slower paced games. Not the end of the world though I gamed on my 60Hz IPS for many years and it was fine really, the best thing is to have one of each and keep them both plugged in, different tools each better suited for different jobs.

My PC now has the 24" 120hz for gaming and 3D, the 30" for other non gaming stuff especially work that requires a lot of screen space like coding, and then a projector as the "big screen" at 120". Each has their own benefits and drawbacks.

You, my friend, live in nerd-vana. We all envy you.

Well I figured I'd get a big TV and when you're looking at really massive screens just for the sake of having a massive screen then it's better to go with a projector IMO, again it's about the right tool for the job, no single display I have is good at everything they all have their strengths and weaknesses and I use them all regularly.

I mirror the thoughts on the large IPS panels here, but then again it can't do 3D and I just got through a bunch of Batman Arkham City in 3D and it was awesome, and some BFBC2 over the weekend in 3D and also trying it in 2D @ 120hz were both excellent gaming experiences.

30" panels from HP consistently have less input lag than 30" panels from Dell. Some of the Dell panels (e.g. 3008) are extremely high.

I am yalking about the quality of the screen itself. The Dell seems to be higher marks in that area.

I have dealt with Dell support but not HP. That would be something I would research in case something happens under warranty and you need to call them up. I have no experience with HP at all there.

I have had a U3011 for about 16 months, the first one developed problems after 4 months, but I had a new monitor at my house with 24 hours after I contacted Dell about the problem. The second had beeen flawless after a year of usage and I have been very pleased with it and Dell's customer service.

Thank you everyone for some good input - I pulled the trigger on the HP ZR30w, its not been long enough to give a fair opinion just yet.

My first opinions so far at that the color is awesome, very pleasing monitor to have sitting in from of you vs. so many models trying to use flashy appearances that take away from the monitor when its on.

Gaming (so far), just a bit of screen tearing, however 2560x1600 gaming is nothing short of awesome - I do miss the 120Hz (I think, it may take a bit to be fair). I've noticed my GTX 680 gets pretty hot now compared to 1920x1080, seems its taking much more horse-power to this monitor (which it should).

So far would I take this move side-ways again from an awesome 27" 1920x1080 120Hz Monitor to 30" 2560x1600 60Hz, yes... I wouldn't use the word smooth for 120Hz, more like fluid vs 60Hz.
