120GB Western Digital 8MB Cache SATA $99 $50 Mail in rebate

Damn you Fry's!!!!! Come to Minnesota. Guess I have to move to get in on the sweet creamy Fryness

Actually found this at Outpost for $49 AR.

Linky

I also did a bit of reseach to find that the WD1200JDRTL is the SE version of the Drive according to WD.

Linky2

These are quieter and cooler and more robust than previous drives. They also have NCQ and 150 interface.

The thing that caught me was the 1yr warranty...I was about to drop my order in the system, then I thought...only one year?

BUT....Read the bottom of the WD shop page (Linky2) It says the SE and RE drives have a 3yr warranty!!!

So...WD1200JDRTL on the WD site is SE and had 3 yr warr...Outpost says 1 year for te same PN...I'll choose to believe WD.

Order placed...and I don't even need them right now. I'm building a system later next month.

DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE "2 PER CUSTOMER" ON THE OUTPOST SITE...THAT "DEAL" IS GOOD FOR BUYING THE DRIVE NOT THE REBATE!

REBATE ENDS TODAY

BUT....Read the bottom of the WD shop page (Linky2) It says the SE and RE drives have a 3yr warranty!!!

Read closer... the 3yr warranty applies to bare drives only, not retail. Still SATA for less than 50c/gig ain't bad in my book.

I looked through the WD site and didn't see any reference to NCQ. I realize the rebate is over but I'm still shopping so for my piece of mind could you please point me to where you saw that the SE drives have NCQ?

BY GOD YOU ARE RIGHT!

I'm an idiot! I made several very large assumptions...

1) That a drive is a drive and regardless of Bare or Kit, the warranty would be the same
--WRONG -- Bare drives are 3 years Kits are 1 year ($14 to upgrade to 3 year)
2) I know some engineers at WD and they said the new SATA drives support NCQ, I know that the 150 interface is standard on SATA II and SATA II includes NCQ, so since the WD1200JDRTL is a 150 drive, I assumed that it was SATA II and included NCQ...
--WRONG -- NCQ is only included on the Raptor drives and I presume on the next generation SATA that is not yet out.

Egg on my face :disgust: 😕

Sorry for the bad information.

Now I have to consider whether to keep these drives. They are cheap enough that I almost feel compelled to keep them and RAID them on my Linux box. Somethign to think about.

sorry for the confusion everyone.
