120gb 850 Evo vs 250gb 840 Evo

Trying to make a decision here, I have an 840 Evo 250gb SSD coming my way (NIB) and a 120gb 850 Evo in my current PC. Storage space aside (I don't store anything on my boot drive aside from software), which would perform better in the real world? I've compared some benchmarks at the link below and it looks like when the older but higher capacity 840 Evo wins, it wins by a good amount but when the 850 Evo wins, it's not by too terribly much. Then again, those are synthetic benchmarks so that doesn't always tell the whole story. The newer 850 EVO has the 3-D VNAND so would that give me a more long term reliable drive?

So my question is does one drive provide any real world benefits over the other? I have a feeling I'm splitting hairs here but it never hurts to ask.

The 840, some of them at least, suffered from performance degradation over time. A wipe and reinstall would fix it but some people found the whole situation frustrating.

The 850 will be more reliable but it's up to you. I stayed away from the 840 and opted for the 840 pro when I was moving away from sandforce based ssd's. Didn't Samsung release a firmware update to rectify the slowdowns with the regular 840?

Would that have to do with its garbage/TRIM performance?

I may keep the 850 in my main rig; the extra space would be nice but not needed. I did find this, they released two firmware updates for the drive in an attempt to fix the potential performance issues that were coming up. Hopefully the second updated firmware (April of 2015 is the last release) will keep the drive chugging along. It'll be a drive I'm glad to have but not one that I would want in my main rig as of right now but a great replacement for the 60gb SSD in my laptop.

I wouldn't really trust the 840 Evo - The performance degradation is a sign that data stored on the drive deteriorates and "rots" over time. Who knows if it will be readable at all in 4 years (maybe at 0.5MB/s?). The firmware update looked more like a workaround than an actual fix to me. The 850 Evo on the other hand is much more reliable due to V-NAND and larger cell size.
