120c core temp...

Should my comp even be running? Well thats what i'm getting from mbm and i'm also getting the overheating beeps from my mobo...

What could be wrong? i've applied and reapplied aa several times on my hsf...

My comp:

p4 1.8a
Via p4xb-sa mobo
via p4x266a chipset
pc2100 ddr
4 case fans
intel stock cooler with stock fan with thermal pad removed and arctic alumina applied
wd 40 gb hd
gf3 ti200

You obviously picked the wrong sensor in temp setup....try other options....

Why you are there, run sandra cpu and see if mobo is throttling...I tricked myine into throttling when I picked the wrong sensor and it said 127c...

hmmm...then what should my average be?

If i change sensors, i get 34c or 40c...

Another thing is that my bios temperatures are jumping around...

from 38 to 40 to 45 to 50 to 38 randomly

34-40c are both within that range of what I would expect....need to contact mbm or other users and see what they are running...

The bios fluctuations can be a bug...we are talkin abut via!!!😉

Look for bios upgrades...may be a known problem that has been fixed....

there is no via section...i already checked =D

But i'm pretty sure i'm running at 120...

Noone has answered my question yet: can your comp run at 120c? I haven't ruled that out yet...

That is 5c from mandatory shutdown....120c wuold have that chip so throttling it would feel like a slug...

Are you overclocking your chip? What's your core voltage?

I seriously doubt your CPU would get that hot, even if you were running it without the heatsink on (not that I'd recommend it).

I think if your core were at 120, it is safe to say that your heatsink would be at least 100 C. dab some water on the sink and see if it boils!

i'd try it, but very carefully.

I dont think i would put water on it, thats just silly! I would hold my hand close to it to see if i feel heat from it. Then touch it to see if its hot. If it feels HOT!, not just warm your HS is doing all it can to disipate the heat. I would dismantle it. Check for clearences and reinstall. Check to see if the HS compund has been touched by the heatspreader. if not make sure it does.

it doesn't feel like its been heated at all...

My assumption is that the hsf isn't coming in contact with the cpu, but when i apply more aa, it just comes out in the sides!!! Yes i apply it evenly...yes i apply only a paper thin layer...

what should i do? return it?

clean it all up really good.

place a long strip of paper on the CPU. (long enough that you cant try and pull it out)

reinstall the hsf - try to remove the strip of paper - it shouldnt budge at all.

🙂

you cpu would fry at 120c. no way in hell it could run that hot. that is above and beyond intel's max thermal limit is. You are more then likely running 120 F not C

No possible way it could get there. It will throttle to off, I am pretty sure. Remember the video from Tom where he pulled the heatsink off the P4 and it lived just fine. I believe there is a maximum temp where it just shuts down, you could go check in the spec sheets.

I think you just picked the wrong sensor in MBM. Did you go to their webpage and see what the setting are for your mobo?

.........................edit...........................
I checked and your mobo isn't listed, so your going to have to guess. I would set up all available sensors and let them show in high/low page and then turn on something that loads your processor like Prime95 and then watch which one changes. The CPU should change the most and the system should change just a little and it may take some time if you have good airflow. The sensors that don't move don't mean squat......😀

anyways...can a computer run at 120 c?
Definitely...NO...if your processor would be at real 120C it would burst into flames

Seriously...the temp limit for CPUs before they die is between 70C and 90C, depending which cpu. I don't think they do any beep beyond this...perhaps a final one... 😛

That can't be your cpu temp.

I have 3 readings come up on my gigabyte board as well. Case, which is usually around 36-37, CPU which hovers around 44-45 and one other one that the MBM site says to ignore which is usually somewhere in the 120's.

Ignore it. The other two temps you found are your case temp and cpu.

lol, if this were all true then my PC'd be at -55oC! which I doubt...

nah, its sitting nicely at 56 for stock 1800.

However my other 1.333 Athlon does tend to go 65 - 70 but it is on an asus board and these do tend, as said earlier, to report temperatures 10 degrees above the actual value. I think it was because their earlier boards had problems and cpus were dying cuz of incorrect reports or something like that, so they changed it to help protect cpus? or something.. can't remember. and if u can understand that ur a genius! lol

Su1c1da:
" when i switch to fahrenheit, it shows 260f!!!!"
but those temperatures are definately wrong...even my XP 2100 doesn't go beyond 65 😛

Fatbaby:
"so i can assume a p4 1.8 can run without an hsf?"

No any CPU should be run without a Heatsink and Fan...atleast at the present time.

If you do wanna test it running without hsf..dont run it more than 8 seconds...as your cpu temp are 120C with the heatsink..imagine without the HS ;/
