Can't imagine moving data that fast. Copy 1TB of information in 100 seconds.

Cray is using DataDirect Networks' (DDN) biggest, baddest array in its supercomputers.

This is the SFA10000, which offers up to 2.4PB from 1,200 SSD, SAS and SATA drives in two rack cabinets. It features up to 10GB/sec bandwidth for reads and writes, up to 1,000,000 random IOPS to cache and 300,000 random IOPS to disk, and over 60GB/sec of internal system bandwidth.

Data is placed on the best drive tier according to its priority and access pattern, and RAID 1, 5 and 6 are available. Connectivity is provided by 16 8Gbit/s Fibre Channel ports or 8 40Gbit/s Infiniband ports. It has a native parallel file system and application hosting, an active/active redundant design, and high-speed mirrored cache.

10GB/s is wicked fast by today's desktop standards but it just makes me sad to realize that even at blistering 10GB/s it will still take 100s to transfer 1TB. I guess I'll be impressed when things get to 1TB/s speeds. That'll only take about 10yrs :p

1200 * Intel X25-V (250MB/s) would yield 300GB/sec or 0,3TB/sec; at least theoretically. ;-)

Not that your CPU could ever process data that fast; well above your RAM speed. ;-)

It'll be weird seeing HDD's relegated to being very slow, albeit very high capacity backup or 'slow' devices, as we've seen with tapes over the past decade.

And to think that I still have a 4mm DAT kicking around, lol. Actually I keep it around just in case someone brings me a 4mm DAT audio tape to extract. Had a few friends bring some awesome concerts from the past, and I ripped 'em and made those guys so happy :)
