Hi,

Bargain hunting for better LCD HDTV. I noticed specs on websites often do not refer to refresh rates. I was wondering if there were any other characteristics of newer LCD panels that were more common I could refer to, such as 6 mhz refresh rate, 4,000+ to 1 contrast etc that was more easily referenced so I know what I am looking at, so to speak.

Thanks in advance.

Honestly I think 120hz TV's look completely fake and take away so much from the movie experience. Everything looks real to life and the picture is almost perfect but it's just too real.

How can they look too real? I am about to get a Sharp 52inch 1080P LCD model from last year for 1600ish, The 120mhz model from this year is over 800 bucks more. If the 120 is gonna be that much better? Cant tell if your being serious or joshing Q

Perhaps you're confusing 120Hz with another aspect of these new HDTVs. The difference between 60Hz and 120Hz should only be visible with 24fps film, I believe, and should only affect the the fluidity of movement. I don't see the difference between 60 and 120Hz, except during a store demo with scrolling movie credits. I do understand what you're referring to though - the crispness of some HD movies make it look more like video, rather than film (I may be referring to this incorrectly).

For the OP, I'd imagine LCD TVs that make use of 120Hz are actively advertising that fact. If it's not listed, more likely than not, it's 60Hz. I believe 8ms response time is the status quo, with faster ones ideal for gaming (?). Not sure about contrast ratio, but most LCD TVs I've been looking at had 10000:1 contrast ratios.

They will definitely advertise their faster refresh rate as there are very few tvs that have it

As for what Quasmo said, I agree that they look fake. About half the employees at my store like it, the other half hate it (there doesn't seem to be much in between). I would say 60% of customers like it 40% really don't like it. Even though there are ways to lower the refresh rate on those tvs I would definitely see what one looks like since you are paying a lot of $ for that feature.

I'm refering to the demo the stores have going where they have a split screen. The movie looks incredibly fluid, and almost fake. It also seems to take away some of the color. I just don't like it.
