120 Hz Lcd tv and HDTV out on video card

I picked up a SAMSUNG ToC 46" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV w/ DNIe - LN46A650, for a computer monitor. I knew the 60Hz sometimes 75Hz limits on resolutions when using DVI-HDMI and VGA, but I was wondering if new cards(I haven't been keeping up) with HDTV out will allow for the 120Hz to be used?

I did read the LCD guide, but didn't see this mentioned.

Thanks.

AFAIK (unless something has changed very recently) all of the "120hz" modes are essentially processing done by the TV. Whether that's black frame insertion, some sort of smoothing, etc. the TV only accepts the normal 60hz input.

Yeah, all of the so-called 120hz LCDs right now just run at 60hz.

There was some news a while ago about a Viewsonic display that may possibly do true 120hz using dual link DVI, but I don't know when it's supposed to come out.

The Auto-Motion Plus option is available for all inputs except VGA on the Samsung LCDs. I'm currently using the LN40A650 on my media PC, movies seem to run just a tad bit smoother than regular LCD, but nothing significant. There is input lag when using DVI-HDMI adapter/cable, not noticeable on Windows desktop, but most noticeable when playing intense FPS games. No input lag is detected when using VGA connection, but as mentioned above, the 120Hz option is not available for VGA.

Also the restricted resolution option is PITA. Lots of time the TV will display "Mode Not Supported" whenever resolutions such as 1680x1050 is used. This probably won't be a problem if you don't move your computer a lot, but I move it around and hook up to my 22" LCD often to do other stuff.

I think he means that what they call 120hz right now is marketing, not 120hz at all.

And true 120hz would be very good to have regardless of stereo support.

How can they advertise 120 if in fact it cannot do 120 at all?

That's just outright fraud.

Like I said from a hardware perspective for LCD monitors, 120 is not a big deal of an update.

Thanks you for the replies.
Didn't think I would be able to use the 120 Hz, just an after thought. I'm using the VGA with 1920x1080 @ 60Hz for apps, and 1280x1024 @ 75Hz for games; what little gaming I have time for.

If anyone has any recommended settings or tweaks, please share.
Overall, I'm happy with the tv, even if the 120Hz was somewhat of a marketing trick.

Great TV...er monitor. I was gonna pick up a 40A650 to replace my Westinghouse 37w3 but decided instead to get a LN-T4081F...mostly because of the (sale)price. Got it for $1199 shipped from Crutchfield. :D So far I'm loving the LED back light stuff.

The 650 series are great tv's especially after the initial couple of bugs were worked out. Even though you may never use the 120Hz feature it's still a great tv with or with out it(and I prefer with out...).

You could go over to the AVS forums for help with calibrating it but if you're not doing anything that requires it then it's what ever looks best to you.

Also, a DVI to HDMI setup might look better on that monitor...especially for text.

I have the 4671 Samsung and the 120mhz feature is really bad for movies (non-animated) but CG movies look incredible. Sports also look amazing with the 120hmz activated. No TBE on my TV either (thank god!).

u just keep on telling ur self that, I noticed it right away in UT3 and sc with my 32A650, thaz y I sold it quick, game mode does reduce input lag, but the whole monitor's settings are locked and the contrast/brightness also drops alot

Well that is proof it exists. I'm saying I don't notice it. Spend most of my time on embedded coding/designing systems....don't have to worry about seeing a missile streak by.

When I do game, I prefer strategy games, so the lag isn't as important.

But yeah, an electron in a vacuum will beat crystals aligning any day.

Thanks for the the links....top one has great comparisons.

This has nothing to do with crt vs lcd, my Soyo and plenty of other LCD I've owned have very little input lag compared to the 650, most HDTV are not ready to be used as monitors for serious online competitions yet.

Most people aren't trying to do serious online competitions for whatever, either. So who cares. If he can't notice it, then it's not going to hurt anything less than like the most serious gamers out there. shrug.

He might not even play first person shooters. Why jump on the guy immediately for his choice of panel?
