120 fan in SX830 (other questions inside)

I have a SX830 with 4 x 80mm Panaflo L1A's. I have the computer sitting right beside me, and it is still pretty loud. I had them filtered with used Bounce dryer sheets, but it was cutting down on airflow too much. I would like to have a good amount of airflow and it be filtered. So, I was thinking I could take out one or both of the 80's, whip out my dremel and put a 120mm Panaflo L1A and filter that. Maybe even 7volt the 120. What would be louder? My current 2 x 80mm Panaflo L1A's (24 CFM, 21 dba each) or one 120mm Panaflo L1A (68.9 CFM, 30 dba). If there isn't much difference between the two as far as noise goes, I think the 120 would be better b/c of more airflow. So what do you think?

21dba + 21dba = 24dba

Also even if the dba are the same, 120mm fans sound "quieter" because they spin at lower rpm and your ears like that sound better heh.

4 la1s should be 27dba added up... should be, but i dunno how accurate that is in reallife.

Most harddrives are louder than 30dba, most 60mm cpu fans are 30some dba, powersupplies are 30 some too.

When you add those in the 27dba from the la1s, they doesn't mean much.

27dba + 37dba = 37.1dba or something

log ( 10^2.7 + 10^3.7) = 37.4dba w00p

Cool, I was wondering if there was a formula or something to add up the dba's Thanks I think I'm gonna get the 120. A good bit more airflow with just a little more noise.

I personally dont think its worth modding, but hey, it's a good weekend project... maybe its all this homework I've got... if you're gonna mod the 120mm hole, make sure you read some of the stuff here: www.7volts.com

Uh, the panaflos are likely not the source of the problem noise, more likely it's the HSF, vidcard fan, maybe even a chipset fan. Disconnect all the case fans, run it like that for a few minutes, just as a means of problem identification. I'd run 'em all at 7v before I cut it up, just to see....
