12 things you should not buy in 2010, not just 10

I just bought a laptop. Now, whether or not I get it by the end of 2010 is still unknown. Fuck you Lenovo.

For those too lazy to click through:

1) GPS units
2) Country club memberships
3) Major League Soccer (MLS) season tickets
4) Biodiesel vehicles
5) Laptop computers
6) Microsoft Office 2010
7) Wii Fit
8) Playboy Magazine subscription
9) Fashions in the color Mimosa
10) The Kindle DX
11) Pork
12) Gold

office 2007 is 100x better than 2003. the author is clearly a retard in that regard. and GoogleDocs and OoO is nowhere near as capable or as widely used as office. get with the times, fool! 🙂

Mmmmm, pork.

If I saw somebody saying they didn't want to eat pork because of "swine flu", I'd call them a fucking dumbass.

What's up with these what not to buy articles? Does anyone listen to these articles, or are they written mostly to stir up talk and get attention for the site? Anyways...

1. I think others mentioned this in the 10 things not to buy thread, but not everyone has a smart phone. Plus, the costs involved in getting one are nothing to sneeze at.

2. I wouldn't get one anyways. But from what they say it seems like a great time to pick up a membership if they're being discounted.

3. I haven't been following soccer so I don't know how much truth there is behind his words.

4. From what I've seen bio fuel prices fluctuate just as much as gas. I would probably just stick with a good mpg gas car though.

5. You can find basic laptops for $300-400. The only netbooks you can find for $200 are the shitty basic ones. Really, I think they serve different purposes so it's not like one should eliminate the other.

6. Whatever, although his reason for disliking Office 2007 seems shallow (change is bad?)

7. Wii fit may not be an exercise routine, but if it gets people to be active even for a little bit that's a good thing. Especially if the alternative would be sitting on the couch doing nothing while playing some game. Besides, as Health and Fitness says, diet is most important, then exercise.

8. I think this applies to many print media, not just playboy. However, sometimes it's nice to have a tangible copy to hold in your hands.

9. Don't care.

10. Don't know squat about the ebook market, but this sounds like an issue of a quickly evolving market. Something better is always just down the line, so buy what you need when you need it.

11. Don't buy pork because it might be more expensive? Has this guy heard of inflation?

12. Not an investor, no comment.

WTF at #1? I put in-dash units in both of our cars and haven't looked back. It was the single best thing I did last year. Dedicated GPS, ipod controls, bluetooth, large screen, and rear view capability. Why the hell wouldn't I want that?

If I hadn't bought it then, I'd sure suggest getting it in 2010. Some clunky ass iphone app does not substitute for a GPS.

Laptops will not die anytime soon. I wonder what the sales figures are for individuals buying computers, but from anecdotal experience it seems laptops have become a hotter sellers than desktops in recent years. The performance disadvantages just aren't there anymore for people who don't do a lot of gaming or development.

That list is full of fail.
The whole GPS argument is stupid. I have a GPS for my car because it cost $100 and it provides an excellent service to me. I do not have a smartphone because its way too expensive for my usage needs.

No comment on 2 and 3 (golf and soccer), wouldn't buy into those anyway.

On biodiesel he has the argument all wrong. Pretty much all diesel engines (if not all) can take biodiesel (that's one of the reasons why biodiesel can be a great idea, as it can be used in vehicles and machinery that already is out there). So while it may not be a wise financial choice to buy biodiesel fuel, you can always go back to just regular diesel (which currently is cheaper than gas where I am, though that changes fairly often)

The laptop argument isn't all that great either. For many people, a laptop fits one's needs better than a netbook or desktop can. Simple as that.

Similarly for Office 2010. While there may not be much need for the typical user to upgrade to 2007. From what I've used so far, 2010 is a fine upgrade. So if you need Office, no reason not to get 2010. Also, there will be the "Starter" edition, which is completely free (though ad supported).

The whole argument about pork is a little silly. "Don't buy pork because it might go up in price". That just doesn't make sense. It would make sense to not buy pork if it DOES go up in price beyond what you are willing to pay.

Anyway, basically it all comes down to each person making a researched and informed cost-benefit analysis of his/her purchases.

office 2007 is 100x better than 2003. the author is clearly a retard in that regard. and GoogleDocs and OoO is nowhere near as capable or as widely used as office. get with the times, fool! 🙂

The interface is my only complaint. While I am sure it is easier to learn for a newbie, Office veterans do not like having to relearn Office. Why they did not include a classic theme is beyond me.

1. Does the iphone GPS work in places where you cannot get a signal from a cell tower? Even if it did, I'm guessing I'm not overlaying any map.
6. He's a journalist. After using Word 2003, learning how to use Word 2007 must have been very difficult for him, if it's enough for him to whine about. The 9th and 10th graders at my school made the switch with zero problems. Logical conclusion: journalism majors make up another sub-group of technology idiots.

11. Pork. Hmmm, if he's correct, then I *will* buy pork this year. Next time I see whole pork loins on sale for $1.79 a pound, I'll get 3 or 4 instead of just one. (I buy them whole, cut & shrink-wrap them myself - center cut pork chops, canadian bacon, and pork loin roasts.)

Haha I loled at Microsoft Office 2010. So true. 2003 is perfect, why did they have to make not only one release, but now two? Now there are 3 different office file formats floating around instead of just 1. Worse is they charge an arm and a leg then only a few years later they release again. It's pointless to spend all that money really.

Hmm that's a tough call. I can buy a $600 iPhone and pay $10 per month to use the GPS on it, or I can go to Best Buy and get a $100 GPS that hasn't required a subscription in the 3 years I've owned it. This math is just too damn hard. Which one is cheaper!?!?

I don't know about Bell, but on Rogers and Fido, GPS is free. Go search up Navigon. The app costs money, but no subscription fees..

So to answer your question, iPhone is cheaper, since I don't need to buy a GPS on top of it.

Lets see:

1) GPS units - already have two, so I won't need another in 2010.
2) Country club memberships - Since they started letting women and ethnics in, what would be the point?
3) Major League Soccer (MLS) season tickets - The thought never entered my head to buy either
4) Biodiesel vehicles - The thought never entered my head to buy this
5) Laptop computers - If the desktop holds out another year this won't be an issue but I'm leaning toward another desktop
6) Microsoft Office 2010 - See above
7) Wii Fit - I have a Fit Sport which likely gets better mileage than the Wii
8) Playboy Magazine subscription - People pay for porn?
9) Fashions in the color Mimosa - I have no idea what that id
10) The Kindle DX - The thought never entered my head to buy this
11) Pork - Mmmm, nom, nom, nom
12) Gold - Price is too high right now but high karat is really pretty

Still using excel 2003 and don't see any reason to change. Wake me up with c# replaces VBA

I really doubt it will replace it, at best they will have both. C# and VB.NET have coexisted nicely. I want J# back with JavaSe 1.6 syntax / functionality. Visual Studio 2008 is the best IDE out there, IMO. Using MonoDevelop and Netbeans here on Linux, which get the job done.

wow, what a bullshit article. I was an Office 2010 beta tester, and i have to say, it's pretty freakin cool. It's great for people like me who have been holding out on buying another office distro since 2003...

I'm pretty sure my phone's GPS requires a data connection. For longer trips on rural roads that pretty much makes it useless.

That's actually no longer true. Prior to 2006, VW's diesel engines could run B100 fuel (though not officially). Since the introduction of the 2008 diesel models, various emissions related modifications were made such that B100 will now leak into the sump. At best the newer diesel cars can use B5 and that's it.

With regard to BMW's diesel engines, I'm don't know what's actually possible (manufacturer recommends no higher than B5).

But will it work if you're in an area w/ no reception?

Another traffic generating Internet list. This one lacks a "most of", "best of", or "worst of", so I'll have to pass.

2007 was an example of change for change's sake. If I wasn't forced to use it at work, I wouldn't be so pissed about how awful it is. Why should I be forced to relearn a whole software package, just to make it easier for the 2% of business/education that hasn't learned how to use a spreadsheet or word processor yet?
