The price jumps up a lot adding a 256gb ssd. Might as well get the 2.6 ghz model then for 1499 since it comes standard with 8gb of ram.

??? Are you talking about the Retina Pro?

Because all current Retina Pros have 8 GB RAM minimum.

If you're talking about the US$1099 model, that's not Retina, and it's also several years old now, so it's kinda pointless to get that one in 2014.

You might also want to look at the refurb store. You can get the 2013 model Pro Retina 13" with 256 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM for $1189.

Yea the retina pro. I would not get the older model as I could probably find one used if I wanted. 8gb should be fine for at home development for fun, not sure if I really need 16gb.

If Retina Pro, I'm not sure what you're talking about then, because all already have 8 GB.

I find it amazing that some stores (apple even?) were selling early 2012 macbook pros in early 2014. Are they still doing this?

Because it's not cool and it's misleading to the consumers. I know best buy does it.

A refurbished late 2013 pro will still be a good product. I mean when they sell overstock of old, HDD driven, non retina models. The inch thick ones.

The June 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro is still a "current" model. That's the $1099 model. They have them on display at the Apple Store.

http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro

Not ideal, but then again, its screen, despite being non-Retina, is still quite a bit better than the MacBook Airs' screens.

This is the one in local best buys. You can easily add more ram and a better hd if needed. I haven't been keeping up to date with their pricing but I can't remember if they used to be cheaper before or not.

If you still have a student id you get $100 off at the Apple store. In my case I'll probably go with a retina 13 inch but I'm undecided if I should choose 16gb of ram or not.

That's awful.
I suspect that June 2012 MacBook Pro will be finally discontinued with the release of the 12" MacBook Retina. These are the specs I'm looking for:

1.1 GHz Core M dual-core M5Y70, with turbo boost up to 2.6 GHz
Fanless
8 GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Intel HD 5300 graphics
11.9" Retina screen at 2304 x 1440
256 GB PCIe SSD
Thunderbolt
USB 3
802.11ac
Bluetooth 4.0
Backlit keyboard
Clickable trackpad (although rumours have it that it's clickless)
OS X Yosemite
1.1 kg / 2.4 lb

Maybe they will say something tomorrow. Perhaps with thew new models the rest of the lineup could be discounted as well. I do agree for the $1099 older version that it's a bit too much. Windows laptops now come close to it but then again a similar style Windows notebook is about the same price.

Yeah, they'll have to at least keep some of it around, so they might discount some of the non-Retina lineup. Those ones still run Mavericks, and undoubtedly a MacBook Retina 12" will only run Yosemite or above.

I'm not sure if this mythical 12" device will eventually completely replace both the Airs and the non-Retina Pro, although I'm thinking they'll keep an Air or two around as the Mavericks low cost model at least for the time being.

BTW, I suspect Yosemite and iOS 8 will be released at separate dates, with Yosemite coming later. Since Core M is supposed to officially launch with actual products in October, I think we can hope to see this new MacBook by October and November, easily in time for the holidays. This is despite the claims by some that Apple would not release a new laptop so soon, given that the MBPs and Airs have both been updated within the last few months.

Edit wrong thread

I think they will keep the pro around and the "Air" will still be sold until they get rid of that stock.

Maybe it's the new MacBook 12". That wouldn't make too much sense but not too little sense either.

So, how would the performance of a 1.1 GHz Core M 5Y70 (Broadwell) compare to the 1.4 GHz Core i5-4260U (Haswell)?

I'm assuming the older one would be faster for CPU, but not by a tremendous amount.

Dunno about the GPU, but they're named HD 5300 (Broadwell) and HD 5000 (Haswell).

The Y10 sku turbos to 2.6 vs the 2.7 on haswell so it'll come down to turbo and thermals

4gb was rmbp 13 base model until July 2014 when new base model came with 8gb standard.

That logic board is insanely small, a system running off of that would be 80-90% battery when you took off the bottom.

I brought in my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13" with Yosemite to watch the live stream, and the battery does drop quite fast off the plug.

That's one of the other things I need in a new machine - insanely long battery life. That way I can probably stop carrying around a power plug as well.

I had almost been tempted to buy a second power adapter for my workplace, until I remembered that this laptop is too heavy to carry around all the time anyway.

I dusted off my 2010 11" MBA... man, the battery on that thing is so BAD. It's about 2-2.5 hours depending on use.

:(

It'll be interesting to see how long the battery in my rMBP 14 lasts in 2-3-4yrs time.

It's nice having 2 power adapters. I have my old Macbook power brick with the Mag2 adapter for home use and I leave my other power adapter in my work bag. That goes with me to work just in case, but I haven't had to use it yet.

My sandy bridge MBA still gets a good 4 hrs on a charge. The C2D machine is far far worse and it's only a year older

^^^ There still the possibility of an October event. The event will probably be more for iPads, but sometimes they announce MacBooks there too.

By the way, there is a rumor going around the various rumors sites about a MacBook release next year in the three iPhone colors. While I would like different colors for MacBook Pros, the rumor sounds like a completely made up guess. Likely no basis in fact, yet all the rumor sites are repeating it. I checked out the original article, it just looks like a tech blog post by a kid.

I don't think I'd want one in anything but the white aluminum. Start painting them and I'm likely to have flashbacks to the awful days!
