lol, just because it has 12 ports doesn't mean it can "drive" those resolutions. eyefinity framerates are already crap with just 3 displays.

Silly person. A HD 5970 runs pretty much any game just fine at 5760x1080, that's three 1920x1080 screens :)

well this 5970 can drive 12 x 19x12 @ fps >0
GTX SLI fps =0

The defense rests ;)

Given how Eyefinity works I highly doubt this card actually can output 12 screen Eyefinity. It should enable 12 outputs for desktop mode, or 6 outputs for Eyefinity mode - or 6 for Eyefinity with 6 more still in desktop mode while you game.

The 'slave' GPU's display pipeline can't be used for the single large surface of Eyefinity. This is the same limitation that prevents using the display ports on the secondary card in a regular Crossfire setup (no 6-screen Eyefinity for dual 5870's), and the 5970 this card is built on is still using a Crossfire link between the GPU's.

So if I crossfire two of these on EVGA SR2 I could run 24 displays! Wow with HT on I could have each 'cpu' in task manager per screen! :D

"Only" nine screens is needed to play "Hollywood Squares". ;)

Well, that's just ridiculous. Although a wall of LCD's would be interesting.

Great, now if we can just find someone twisted enough to make a virtual Paul Lynde.

well. from what my memory serves me; at least the ATI goal of having that hemispheric display for total immersion is looking like a possibilty before I'm senile now.

Maybe if you're playing two year old DX9 games and don't mind running medium settings on any newer game that is even remotely stressful.

You don't know what you're talking about. I've a 5970 sitting next to me, and three 1920x1080's in front of me...

Modern Warfare 2 isn't 2 years old. Bad Company 2 isn't 2 years old. Far Cry 2 is but it's DX10. DiRT 2 isn't 2 years old nor DX9. Just Cause 2, ouch, need to turn the settings down to medium, but still not 2 years old or DX9. Call of Pripyat, can't run uber high settings, but sure does look good...

I think that covers it, right? It is offtopic though, because a 5970 won't comfortably run 6 screens, let alone 12...

Funny how everyone can see the gpgpu possibilities for Fermi, even though not a single Tesla variant has rolled of the line yet. Nobody can see any use for 12 screens beyond gaming? Well, almost nobody. A couple of you can.

12 displays? If something is worth doing, I guess it's worth over-doing.

Really, how many people/companies is this going to appeal to enough that they're going to be actually willing to plunk down the money for one (or more)? I just can't see there being enough demand to justify designing this thing in the first place.

not many, that's why this card will probably wont be produced in quantity above 1000 or several thousands.

This is hardly the first card which has been designed, even shown off, that doesn't have a mass market appeal or that doesn't make sense.
Many GPU product designs don't make it to market. At least if it does make it to market it will have been more worthwhile than other projects engineers have undertaken.

Maybe you can crossfire two of these and then it might just get by on some games with 12 displays. But then again if it's a 3-slot are you going to be squeeze 2 of them in on any motherboards?

Classified SR2 and 4X SLI would fit. Although I believe 4X 480s would be better.

ATI already showed a 4X6 display card set up for 24 displays at the HD5XXX launch. So it's possible.
