I'm looking to purchase a new Compound Miter saw. I went to the home depot last night and looked at a Ridgid and Ryobi. I wasn't sold on either one, but the salesman said they were both good but that Ridgid was better.

Well come to find out that Ryobi and Ridgid are made by the same manufacture. So who knows if they are any good.

Does anyone about the quality of those?

What about Craftsman?

I'll also consider DeWalt.

DeWalt is nice. I borrowed a 12" from a friend to do some crown and it worked very well.

No we just purchased a new home and I need it for a bunch of projects. This is something I'd like to keep for a long time. I have a table saw and all the other tools I need. Unfortunately my old miter went out and it's not worth fixing.

I try those families and see which one fits your needs the best, the quality of all of those products are superb.

I've used (and still use) DeWalt and Makita. Those were both excellent. I've yet to try Milwaukee, but I'm willing to!

Does anyone think it's worth it to get a saw with the laser guides? Are they very accurate?

The best deal is to check the classifieds or click on my sig link & check out the for sale forums...

You may want to consider a sliding compound miter saw.

Warning, buying power tools can destroy your life;)

See I'd like to get one with Laser, but Makita and DeWalt do not have any miters with lasers.

Are Ridgid tools any good?

Anyone know much about Delta?

I really like my Makita - I returned two crapsmans after they couldn't fix the fence.

One impotant bit to look for - take a good straight edge with you and lay it along the fence. I've found that many will have a discrepancy between the right & left sides of the fence, and most can't be adjusted independently (my Makita can). This can really cause issues when you're trying to do precision work.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. Will do.

My Brand of preference goes as follows:

1. Makita
2. DeWalt
3. Milwaukee, Bosch, Porter Cable

I have absolutely no complaints with the Makita and DeWalt products; the only variance being my personal preferences as to fit and feel because on a feature comparison basis they're both on par with each other. There are a few Milaukee and Bosch tools that I'd consider but as far as buying from a product line - my order of preference is listed.

I like my Bosch. But if you're looking for a laser guided one, I think Porter Cable makes a good unit. Usually better quality than Delta (i think they're owned by the same company).

What's your budget? If you can get a sliding one, DO IT!

My dad has a 10" sliding Hitachi that is fvckin wicked. I just got a Craftsman 12" with the laser. Not sliding tho :( But works great and the price was

If I had the funds, I'd have gotten a Dewalt or Hitachi. Costco has had a fatty 12" sliding Dewalt for a while now.

I'd like to keep it somewhere in the $300 range. HD has a 12" DeWalt for $299 that seems nice. Otherwise I'm still open to options.

I did look at the Hitachi brand in Lowes a few weeks ago. The only thing I do not like about them is the laser! It is housed at the bottom of the saw, making it useless if you do molding standing up, as it blocks the laser!

The sliding ones are usually 500-600$. Thats just a little too expensive and I don't think i'd use it enough to spend that much.

About 2-3 months ago I was at Lowes, they had what I'd call a "house brand" 12" sliding miter saw for $200. Was there again last weekend tho and they were all out.

Ridgid is HD's "house brand". They are made specifically for HD. I didn't know Lowes had a house brand. Thats why I was asking about the Ridgid models. They have a 3 yr warranty and seemed nice, but I dont know much about them. Otherwise I'll just get the dewalt.

toolcrib on amazon usually has a 25 or 20 off 200 or 250 coupon floating around. see if you can get that and free shipping, and no tax of course.

I have a 10" Dewalt compound miter saw. I think I paid $199 for it about a year ago. Well worth the money. I used it primarily to cut base molding for my kitchen and family room but I plan on doing the rest of the downstairs and the master bedroom as well.

The base molding is around 5 1/2-6 inches tall.

What'd you end up getting?

I went back to lowes for something else, and they had the saw in stock again. GMC is their house brand. 10" sliding miter saw for $189. Had the laser too iirc.

Although I'm sure at this point you already got one. After doing some laminate flooring on mothers day weeked, I sure wish I had a slider!!

Why would you need a slider for that? Isn't that stuff at most around 6 inches wide?
