11MB/s 4K read with my new Samsung 840 128Gb SSD, too slow?

Brought a new Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb SSD, running on a (quite old) machine: Core 2 Duo P8700, 4Gb RAM, SATAII, Windows 7 x64 clean install. AS SSD Benchmark shows really poor performances on random 4K read. Other values seems good to me, considering the slow interface and the small capacity:

Do you think this is normal? Is there something I can do to speed up 4K read value? The SSD itself seems quite fast; however after a lot of read/write I can clearly see a performance drop, like micro stuttering (Sandforce background work?).

I believe Samsung uses their own MDX triple core/ARM 9 controller. My guess would be the CPU, and SATA2 interface. Also check for the latest chipset drivers from intel.

Thank you for your support. My chipset is ICH9M, I've installed the latest RST driver pack (iata_cd.exe). Previous benchmark is without RST. Now I've got:

Do you think it's just the normal difference between tests?

On a current-tech system, you would be seeing double the overall numbers that you're getting now. I think the SATA 2 is holding you back. However, you're still hugely faster than any disk drive on that system. Still a net gain.

First thing is Samsung 840 does not use SF controllers. Had they used these controllers you would not have had this issue at at all 🙂. Intel & SF based controllers work amazingly well. I am using Intel 520 SSD & this works best for me

Your slow 4K speeds could possibly have to do with CPU idling. Run your test again after disabling CPU power saving features in the BIOS.

If you bothered reading beyond the first post, you'd see that it was a SATA controller driver issue. After installing the Intel RST drivers, his 4k speeds are about identical to my Intel & SF based SSD's that work so amazingly well together.
