sad, but better than having 750 of them die, right?

From what I've read, the gas prevented the terrotists from detonating the bombs.

It is kinda counter-productive though that they wouldnt tell the doctors what kind of gas it was... they probably would have been able to save most if them.

gotta crack some eggs to make an omlette... It really sucks so many had to die, but what's the worse tragedy? Either 750 die in a firey explosion, or a fraction die to save the others...what a tough decision :(:(

Wonder why the secret of the gas is so important to the Russian gov't that it's worth 118 innocent lives...reminds me of the Kursk incident.

They did the right thing no doubt.......................what's sad is, if the same thing had happened here in the USA, the headline would most likely read

"US Gov. kills 118 citizens with deadly chemical weapons"

I think the Russian's made the right choice. It is unfortunate that so many died from the gas, but it's much better than having everyone dead (like others have said).

I wonder if they decided to actually test the gas before using it....

It's messed up though....at least it shows hostage takers that Governments won't be held hostage as well.....

Didn't you guys read the article??

One Russian expert said the gas used was a chemical weapons agent and blamed the high number of deaths on delays in administering the antidote.

Hundreds of freed hostages are still in hospital, many suffering severe after-effects - including poisoning, confusion and memory loss.
Russia has so far declined to give any details about the gas, maintaining that none of the hostages was killed as a result of its usage.
If it's an okay thing, why would Russia lie about it?

"It's no surprise that the Russians have that kind of stuff," said Ron Madrid, a former Marine and an expert on non-lethal weaponry at Pennsylvania State University.

"They [Russians] spent 30 years putting it together. We're preventing from doing that by treaty and executive order."

Iraq is about to be attacked because it may have "weapons of mass destruction" and chemican and biological weapons, and Russia is allowed to use them on its own people THEN refuse to reveal what it is so that the people can be treated. They have done stupid crap like this before (remember the submarine that they refused help to find?). Looks like trouble with making quick decisions.

By the way, what did the hostage takers want?

The headline would read 700+ die because of late response by our Gov't. I doubt our leaders would have the guts to do what the Russians did. And they did the right thing.

You really don't know? How can you comment on the situation if you haven't even taken the time to read the full story / circumstances?

to be fair, no one knows the full story except for those involved - we all know what we've been fed by the media.

Well, of course, but that is relative to almost any news situation.....You know what I mean.....For the sake of discussing matters that are thousands of miles away the discussion will almost always be based on media reports in one form or another......

Ehhhh... before you go comparing Russia to Iraq think about the situation here...

On one hand we have a country held hostage by insane suicidal maniacs willing to kill several hundred people to make their point and demand movement of the Russian army.

On the other hand we have a psychotic dictator who takes advantage of the free guinea pigs in the city to further the development of more powerful weapons.

Did defeating the rebels or terrorists or whatever require that they not reveal the nature of the chemical they used?
