115v to 235v

if someone from mexico that has their power supply set to 235v plugs it into
our 115v electrical plug does it blow?
i have persons from mexico bring me a computer that was set to 235v.

Not typically. It just doesn't power up.

The other way around (230V into 115V input) does tend to blow things up. ;)

Interestingly I tested this on an old PSU, flipped the switch to 230V plugged in in a 120V outlet and it operated normally :confused: was hoping for something to happen :(

Really? Well, usually nothing happens.

What I was saying is if you have the switch on 115V and you plug it into 230V mains, it will pop something on the primary since it essentially tries to double the input voltage.

thanks for the replies ,i had no idea.worse thing these are mexican nationals and hard to tell them what's up.

I thought Mexico had 115v as standard, at least to where I have been in Mexico, unlike most places in Europe that run 220v. And yes, as a general rule 115v input on a 220v switch setting shouldn't hurt anything, whereas the opposite will, as has been stated

That's true. Mexico IS 115V and uses the same plug we do here in the states.

About half of South America uses 220-240V. They might be from one of these parts of South America, but not Mexico.
